Last week my son and I went to the junkyard and got some parts for my D250 project. Among that we cut out a "big" transmission tunnel from a 90 D150 club cab. We uncovered a 518. He's looking for one for a C body project of his. We went back today for the trans. We pulled it unconventionally as this yard puts everything on its belly, no wheels, nothing. You gotta get a "yard monkey" to bring out a loader to get under anything. Remember we cut out the transmission tunnel? Today we brought the battery Milwaukee grinder back and cut out more floor, til we could get to everything. The yard owner asked how we got the trans out of a truck laying on its belly.
We took it out, up and thru the driver's door. I had to pull the trans off the TC as I couldn't get the engine to turn, and could only get the 2 bolts off the flexplate. so we slid the trans off the TC (I hate having to pull them like that) Then I was able to get the top 2 bolts off that held the TC to the flexplate. I didn't realize this til I got home with it and muscled it off of my taigate. Its a NON LOCKUP 518... only 2 pins on the switch facing the sky and the splines go all the way to the end of the input shaft.
Was this a "90 model year" thing? My son previously had a 90 W250 with a 360 gas, it too had a non LU 518 in it....
I also got the crossmember from it for my 1985 D150 that's getting the A500. and the AC brackets for my 83 D250 that's getting the Magnum dressed like a MP crate motor....
so now I have another trans to rebuild....
I thought I could use the new TC in my 727 thats in my 85 now with the rebuild of this 518.... nope. My 85 727 is LU, this '90 518 is non LU.
Up til a few months ago, they had a 91-93 D150 there with no body on the frame but whole powertrain was still there. That truck had an A500 in it. We thought that was the one we were going after. but the yard has been doing some "rearranging" and we couldn't find that one. At the time, the yard owner told my kid $200 for that one, even if we pulled it. but he got this 518 instead. Better deal in my opinion. No matter what we were getting we got it figuring I was gonna rebuild it before it went in my kid's car no matter what. i probably have enough parts from past leftovers, etc on hand. jsut gotta get the "beef up parts" like the shift kit, the "Superior" servos and the billet accumulator. And see what lever is in the front band position.

Good find. Do not throw away the steel bracket for the transmission mount, the one above the rubber insulator part, that is actually bolted to the transmission. So far, I think that is the one specific part to install a rear wheel drive 518 or 46R series transmission into to those trucks. The older trucks need the crossmember too, unless your transmission can accept the old style spool mount like an older 727 would use.

You may already know all of that since you grabbed the crossmember for your 85, but just making sure.

I waited too long and missed out on a hydraulic controlled, rear wheel drive, overdrive transmission from a 91 or 92 Cummins diesel pickup. Really wanted to see inside that one. Not even sure what that one was called, but maybe a 618.

Non lock-ups used from 1989 - up. They had a 24 spline turbine. Lock-ups used a 23 spline turbine. From the factory there is a code on the converter( on the impeller), typically 3 number code that will tell you if it's a non lockup or lockup style.

Well with the trans out and the TC out, seeing the input shaft configuration that answers the LU/non LU question I'll try and get the PK number and put it out there

True, but if you're perhaps just looking at a converter, the code will tell you what it is. If anyone needs the codes, for both the non lockup and the lockup, I have them.
