I recently purchased a converter from Coan, I gave them all my information they asked for. They recommended a 3000-stall, I told them I wanted it to be tight, this is just a cruise around car. The converter is installed now, and I have never had a performance converter in a car before, so I may be expecting something more from it based on other people's experiences. When I put it in drive or reverse it drops right in fine and the car will move when I let off the brake, when the pedal is mashed, it stalls right at 3000 rpm. The only problem I have is it takes a lot of RPM to get it to move from a stop, and it feels kinda slushy down low. After about 1800-2200RPMs it takes off fine, just not very tight before that. Is this the way it is supposed to be, or is it not tight enough? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Is the throttle pressure cable connected and adjusted correctly? Are you sure it's starting out in 1st gear and not second? Could be a stuck governor valve.

It functioned fine with the stock converter, started doing this after I changed the converter. I just expected it to feel stock, and stall at 3000 when you mash it.

I just want to verify if this is normal, or if there may be something wrong with the converter before I pull it..

I had the same experience with a PTC converter. I just learned to live with the new experience.

I did call them, and was told my transmission was the problem, even after explaining that the only change was the converter.

If this is normal, then I can deal with it, as stated before I just didn't know what to expect.

Obviously, you’ve got two different sets of opinions here. I’ll give you mine. The Coan converter was not a cheap off the shelf converter and you specifically ask for a tight converter. They don’t sound very helpful from your description about talking with them on the phone. I don’t think that it’s normal for it to stall up to 1800 to 2200 RPM before it moves. I doubt you have a very radical cam in if you were running a stock converter before, so it should just take off like when you have the stock converter, unless you put it to the floor. Just my two cents worth.

They don’t sound very helpful for your description about talking with them on the phone. I don’t think personally that it’s normal For it to stall up to 18 to 2200 RPM before it moves. I doubt you have a very radical cam in if you were running a stock converter before, so it should just take off like when you have the stock converter unless you put it to the floor. One quick question, when you installed the converter, did you get it to drop in with two distinct clunks? You have to make sure that it’s fully seated. I don’t believe you could have gotten the bolts and a flex plate connected if it wasn’t in on the second Clunk, but you have to make sure that the pump is correctly engaged. Let us know how it works out. Thanks

It is installed correctly, it doesn't stall up to1800, it is not as crisp down in below as the stock converter was. Before with the stock converter you give it gas and it took right off, now it moves but seems to slip a little, and needs more gas to get rolling, it is no where near as responsive from a stop as it was.

I may be blaming the transmission now, it may just be a coincidence that I changed the converter at the same time. I just got back from a drive, it is still sluggish from take off, but this time it slipped during a hard acceleration and revved up to 6000. It didnt hurt the motor, but when I got it home it would clunk real hard going in gear, and a banging noise was coming from the transmission. I think I am going to change the transmission and see how the new converter acts with a fresh transmission.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost on the converter?

I ordered it from their booth at the PRI show in Indianapolis, I got a 15% discount, shipped it was $790. Took only a week to get.
Yeah. I'd be upset about that. Especially if I asked for a tight converter. What you describe here is not a tight converter.

You guys aren't making any power if you expect a high stall convertor to act like a stock convertor.
Which is it 1800 or 2200 RPM's before it moves.
1800 isn't that many more RPM's than a factory convertor RPM's before movement.

it doesnt stall up to 1800, it is just sluggish until then. And it may be my transmission slipping as well.
