Dash vin tag confusion

My question is ......How is it now that I've decided to attempt to restore my dash vin tag I noticed when googling restoration videos some tags start with a asterisk (star) and end with the same ? I presume the asterisk is in place to prevent an additional digit to be added. Any theory or urban legend is welcomed. I'm confident if anyone knows it will come from this forum.

My 58 Coronet vin tag has 2 stars, but they're in the middle, technically, on the beginning of the second row.
