Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

I just might do this ^^ . But, if it's a slug pig, I would make changes before even taking it to the track
It’ll be a slug pig. I promise. But that will make you look like a super tuner when you make it suck less.

If you look at IQ52’s dyno results plus Richard Holdener etc.. just a cam doesn’t seem to do much to these low cr 440, since they make low torque for there size but decent enough if you over look there size :) what they need is Airflow (rpm) to make up for it.

Once IQ52 stated putting on better intakes and bigger carbs and especially ported heads the 440 stated to wake up and make power in the mid 5,000 rpm which would also help with your gearing.

Changing the gear isn't a deal breaker. And I realize that sunken pistons and inefficiencies are all over the 440. But that doesn't mean it still can't make more than 341 HP that the 5.9 is making (according to Wallace  )

There are two recipes in this thread, both making over 400hp. Chop, chop get to grinding, make your cam choice and put the parts on you have, there is 2/10's or more at your fingertips.
FWIW the 360 never was a good real truck engine. lol

Tim bought big block headers and motor mounts for a reason. So, if he wants a big block, I'll root for it to go quicker.
I keep going back to this post ^^
The original plan for the truck was the 440. It's the only reason I bought the 440, mounts, headers, etc. The 360 magnum was ONLY installed to give the truck some fun runs and challenge the traction while the 440 got "built".

FAST FACTS:
  1. 5.9 was never installed to be the permanent engine. Just an "in the meantime humor me" engine. It exceeded my expectations
  2. 440 got sidetracked and ended up in a '79 Magnum for a while and sat there with a trashed transmission behind it.
  3. '79 Dodge Magnum is gone, 440 is on the stand, and the transmission is in good hands.
  4. I think it's time to get back to the plan..... 440

Done. Stop talking about it and go do it. You could have had the 5.9 out and the 440 in by now.
:poke:

In reality, I won't pull the 5.9 till the 440 and transmission are ready. By the way, the truck is still on the trailer from it's last outing at the track... LOL

Either way you can't go wrong, with the right parts the low cr 440 will perform, if that was and is the plan, sounds settled, I'd throw a decent sized thumper type cam in and go from there.
