Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

-
With all the discussion, it has made me curious. I think with headers, and fresh 452 heads, it should push about 300 + horsepower. I'll probably start with the street dominator and my 750 Brawler. Tune from there. So, we'll try it in slug form, or slow motion first LOL. Unless it goes 15's, then I'll say "why bother?" and go back to the 5.9 :D Then again, my 100% stock-never-taken-apart 318 with the only addition of 4bbl/headers ran it well into the 15's, I'm expecting slightly more with 122 cubes, and much better heads.
  • I do think I'll have to drop my gears from 4.30's down a bit. 440 will run out of lungs in 800 ft. :p

Give it at least 20 initial, don't be afraid to try more and limit it to about 34 all in by 2500 and it will probably be responsive.

you know me.... she'll get what she wants LOL
Probably want to be shifted around 4500 rpm's??? Too much.... ? :p

I'm unsure it's enough. LOL What are you gonna do for valve springs? Leave the stock ones in?
when I had the heads freshened, I put 440 Magnum springs on from Rock Auto! I think I got them for a '69 GTX or something

And the rest of the engine is stock motorhome. You do realize that engine MAY have Six Pack rods in it, right?

Yes, and yes. Actually, many prefer the late model blocks because of better webbing.

Don't expect much from a 440 that has a weak heart and lungs from the factory.
I expect it to outperform the smog 400 I had in the same weight of truck with 3.21's. Smog 400 2bbl, I put a 4bbl on it and headers and ran 14.5's with a sticky brake caliber that stuck so bad you could smell it. By how much?? Let's find out!
Here's one for ya:
  • I ran 15.3's with a '89 LA 360 TBI, single exhaust and factory manifolds. 3.21's. Same truck, installed the 100% stock 400 2bbl and added the 4bbl / headers and ran 14.5's (of course, the sticky brake)

To me hp wise it's the top that matters, cubes and efficiency is gonna decide where (rpm) it's made.

73 3/4 ton 2WD 4.10 Dana open with a 360 2-bbl in a 4500 vehicle ran 17.05 @ 79.95mph. only addition was 70 340 exhaust manifolds and Dart head pipes with turbo mufflers. and the air cleaner lid was flipped:)
also, 9.50 16.5's, 28 or 30" in diameter?
with a PC rebuild kit, Crane 427/454 cam and kit, Hedman headers w/dual exhaust, it would shift into third at 75mph, according to the speedo. still the stock 2-bbl and cast iron intake.
so with cam and headers, the 440 should be in the lo 16's IMO

If I get a window of time, I'll get down there and put the RV pan back on. Wait! The oil pans are the same, right?? Truck and RV I mean.... RV came with a windage tray as well

Net is 195 hp, 320 ft lbs trq.
I'm guessing that would be about 260 hp / 390 gross ??
  • It will have headers and 2.5" straight through muffler on the back. That's gotta be 40 hp (and a bunch more torque) on a 440 from the manifolds, single exhaust and catalytic converter... all in a small single pipe about 18 feet long LOL. When the heads were done, I did remove a little casting and a touch of bowl blending, but I consider it more of a "clean up" than porting. Might be another 10 there. I think I should be somewhere around 300-310 HP gross and maybe 425-450 ft lbs of torque?
Just thinking out loud..... I could be way wrong. But this is my "mind math" :D
