440
.030 Forged 11:1 pistons, steel crank, MP .590 lift solid cam, 906 heads ported , Crane Gold roller rockers. Edelbrock TM-7 intake, 850 Holley.
4500 stall converter.

Or

340
.030 13-1 pistons, mp solid .525 cam, ported x heads, Crane roller rockers, 850 Holley
4500 stall converter.

Both running a 727
Rear gears 4.10 for the 440, and 4.10 or 4.56 or 4.88 for the 340.
Based on being in the same car, which would be quicker in the 1/4 mile.

The 340 would be lighter though.
What if I upped the cam to match the 440? By running a .590" cam, which would probably be the better choice of cams for it, as it does have 13-1 comp.

both very good combos, i'd say 440 due to cube advantage. stroke that 340 out and the 440 would have its hands full for sure.

If your talking about running these engines in your a-body,i give the nod to the 340...and if you stroke the 340 you can laugh at 440's..

I have a 340 in my Valiant.

Stock stroke
.060 overbore
.630 lift roller
X heads
14:1 comp
4.30 gear
3150lbs

11.18 @ 122 best
11.30 @ 120 normal

1.62 60'

But it is not that streetable unless I convert to E85

Chuck

I have to tell ya, I think that .590 cam would be more streetable than the
.509, I had both in similar engines and the .509 seemed rougher down low in the rpms

Power to weight ratio the 440 would definitely run quicker. There is no replacement for displacement !

I have to agree my brother has a 3350lb aspen R/T with a .060 440 stoke stroke ross psitons 12.5 to 1 906 heads big valves ported with the 312 .590 cam. It has a 4400 stall and 4.10 gears and in bad weather goes 11 teens at 120 through exhaust and in good weather 10.80 at 122mph. No way a similarly prepared stock stroke 340 could do that twisting only 6000 rpm. Okay no rip me apart! LOL

Stroked 416 11.0'[email protected] be 10.90's after the gear swap...

So earlier you said a stroked 340 and a stroked 440 would be a good race. So if we put a 4.15 arm in our 440 and make 490 plus cubes its going to go slower than the 10.80's the stock stroke 440 already runs???? A body B body E ebody F body its doesnt matter right? 3350 lbs is 3350 lbs how could that be?????

Are you going up or down in gear? what gear is in it now?

Lets go one further...my other brother Bob has a 4250lb 70 RR convertable with a 493 cube stroker a 4 speed and 4.10 gears. The car runs 12.00s and 120-122 on street tires with a 2.30 sixty foot time. Do the math on the HP at that speed and weight. Lets drop that engine into the brother Steve's 3350lb Aspen that sixty foots 1.48-1.50 foot braking, it has a trans brake but he doesnt use it..hey its his choice! Tell me were not gonna have some real action at that point?! Can you say low tens high nines? The 440 is still iron headed also and the 493 has Stage 6 Aluminums on it, do you still use a factory iron head?

Sorry dont mean to take over the thread or anything but to answer the original question I believe the big block will be faster :)

Well what is done to your brothers car, mine has complete stock interior still and the added weight of a 6-point bar, running stock suspension and those 11.0's are through full exhaust, running a smaller cam and ONLY 10.9 to 1 compression, with a dual plane manifold..i'm sure if i upped the compression and put a bigger cam in it,i'd be well into the low 10's.by the way it 60' in the 1.40's...on STREET TIRES...oh and it only has 3.91's..

What does your car weigh with driver?? That will answer the weight questions and really do we need excuses??? If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle you know what I mean? Were talking about cars in their current state not the what if's.

We are also only supposed to decide on the two engine packages that were listed in the thread.

Excuses??...my car runs runs 11.0's good or bad weather,i don;t blame weather conditions on what number my car runs...11.18 in BAD weather, 10.80's in GOOD weather pleaseeee.......put your other brothers 493 in the volare and it'll run low 10's..geez,if i put my buddies hemi in my car it would run 9's,by the way i said a-bodies not f,or b-bodies...

Correct! Good point and I thought my brothers 440 was as close to the comparables as possible so thats why I piped in. I've given as much help as I can so I'm outta here :) Thanks for listening
