The 70 Duster......

-
Another step forward.....two back. The drivers door I got for the project has a crack near the door hinge mount. With paint on the door it was not visable. However in bare metal, it stood out like a sore thumb. So now I am trying to locate another door.

Weld her up.

The shop is going to weld it and meanwhile I am going to see if I can locate another just in case. Is there any way to reinforce the metal where the hinges mount to the door?

Just a note on welding the crack, body man probably already knows, but make sure the drill a hole at each end of the crack before they weld - keeps the crack from reoccurring. Good luck nice project.

?? I guess that keeps the crack from "running" during the welding?

No, keeps it from reoccurring after the welding is done. See there's a crack, hole at each end of crack = crack can't continue. Method is weld, if mig weld, spots apart from each other as not to distort the metal, then once all crack is welded fill holes.

I am not an A body dash expert; but I did see that some one recently had a thread about modifying a non rallye frame to accept rallye gauges. Wayne

I think that Dave Patik at Performance Car Graphics Tallahassee, FL can help you with dash frame, vin tag, and pentastar logo guestions and solutions. They do much more than just decals. He is a National level car show judge. If you need a phone number just PM me. No door will be required if preped and welded as Joe has stated. Most people skip the extra procedures resulting in rework at some time. My vote is FJ5 Wayne

Thanks for the replies. I did contact the bodyman about drilling the holes. Thanks for the tip!!

According to Mike Mancini here is the correct paint....
dash frame .... suede black
steering column...suede black
upper and lower door frame...gloss black
VIN plate .... semi gloss black
Chrysler stencil....ECS Automotive Concepts

If anyone else could chime in on that let me know. What color was used on consoles?

Door was welded up and worked. Then.........

Nice work going on there. I'm in Austin working on a 73 w/ a 70 nose and it is getting a new 5.7 Hemi.

I may have a sterring column for you before long. I have more than I need, though I don't know which one, yet.

Good to see progress already! Is your wife still persuing her schooling? Wayne

Actually she graduated last year. She is about 1/2 way through residency, so we will likely be moving again in about 18 months. Hopefully I can get this car done before then.

I actually bought this car on her birthday in 2005. Since she loves the bright green colors and it was on her birthday, she started claiming it as "her car". Anyway, she picked the color and the interior pattern. Also since she loved her Dakota R/T, she wants a 360 in it! So that is most likely what it will get when we get that far along.

Thanks! I would love to put a late model 5.7 FI Hemi in this car. I just don't think it is in the "funds" for this car. Keep us updated on the progress of your car!!

I would think you could do it from inside of the door where it wouldn't be visable

They did just as the "tip" was above. They drilled a hole at the tip of each end of the crack. Once the entire crack (about 4 inches long) was welded they welded up the two holes and worked it smooth again. Before the shot any primer or sealer you basically could not tell it had been worked.

Got the paint in from Mike Mancini today. So the bare dash frame is ready to be stripped and repainted. I really wanted a rallye dash since we have the car this far apart but I did not want to hold up progress. Now I need to figure out how to improve on the factory cluster look.

10/29/2009 : Not much in the way of major progress. The bodyman is working all the small items such as interior trim pieces. He is also starting on the passengers door. The bodywork is the slow going part.....

12/09/2009 - Project derailed....had to make the tough call to pull it from the shop that was working on it. It may be a while before I have any new progress updates.

12/10/2009 - Spent the day contacting other shops about trying to finish the car. Hopefully it will be back in a bodyshop within 60-90 days.
