Me and people I know keep Edelbrock carbs on the shelf to use when starting a new build, because we know it work. Then we only change it out if we want more power. Never before heard anybody slamming an Edelbrock carb. I have a FiTech port system on my 408 and it starts easy and runs smooth...
Right on. Can verify by seeing if problem goes away when fans are disconnected. Also measure voltage at idle. Sould be over 14v just after start up. If it goes down to near 12.5v, alternator is not handling it.
Thanks, I learned something. Ignorant question: So, do the pre-71 "kickdown" linkages vary the pressure to cause the upshift to be at a higher rpm, but cannot cause a shift down to a lower gear?
I believe Williams Performance Engines has gotten over 700 HP with similarly spec'd Chevy small blocks (billet block). I would call Williams and tell them what you are trying to do, and ask them for suggestions. They are pretty cool, if they have the time to talk.
I've had both with 4 speeds, and both were great. Just emotionally, the 340 was more fun to drive. The 383 had a lot of torque. Car seemed more balanced with the 340. 340 seemed to rev quicker.
You can easily modify the '63 trans cross member. No problem with exhaust clearance, but need to relocate the trans mount backwards some. Use a hacksaw or sawzall to notch out a center piece of the back side of the crossmember and bent it backwards flat, then drill a new mount hole and weld in...
Very true and and a fun swap. Did exactly that in 1968. Ruined the 225 in 1963 Dart, so went to the wrecking yard and got a 383 w/833. Fit pretty good. Had to fab motor mounts, but that was not too bad. Only big problem was the headers. No room for exhaust manifolds or headers without cutting...
