So been a month and now we’re back at it. Final decision is to build the 318 it’s all disassembled and ready to go to the machine shop. On Tuesday I’m going to spec out the engine with the builder and buy the parts. I’ll post what we decide on. The builder thinks we can get over 400hp out of the...
Well right now the Magnum has all kinds of wires and hoses hanging off it, plus plug proctector tubes that make it look like a rusty porcupine.
I’ll hold off judging until we clean it up a bit.
My engine builder is going out of State for two weeks to rebuild some diesel in a big commercial truck. The disassembled 273 is sitting in his shop next to the 5.2.
Once the 273 block has been evaluated by the machine shop we will see if a light clean up would let us use it (with the Magnum...
Will the TTI headers bolt to the Magnum heads? The headers look to be standard SBM, the ports are larger than the 273 head exhaust ports. What mating the 5.2 to the A833? I heard it’s not difficult but don’t know exactly….
So today we picked up a 5.2 Magnum from a late 90s Dakota. $300 from the local pick & pull. Also scored a brand new Milodon SBM timing gear set for $50 from the machine shop that’s going to do our work.
So that brings up the 273 block is going to the machine shop to be assessed for the extent...
It is a very nice, clean AZ car that I’ve had a lot of fun with for 8 years. It deserves a good engine and doing it right is my
Number 1 objective. Objective 2 would be keeping is somewhat of a period piece. I’m guessing the motor was done sometime in the 80s so “period piece” is somewhat...
So many good ideas, I Just sent this thread to my builder. 1) I like 4eighteners Post#41 fast and cheap, love the vibe of the car “as is” but need to build confidence it would work 2) 318 using 340 heads and 273 parts, the inquiry is out on what’s available here in Green Bay 3) bite the bullet...
Well I’ve missed a lot of great comments, been out musky fishing this afternoon (with no success). It’s gonna take some time to go though and sort out my thoughts.
Some have asked…yes it is a factory 4 speed car. 7 1/4 rear with an open diff and 2.94 gears. It was super fun to drive with the...
My preference would be to do a build on this motor. Already .060 is an issue. From reading numerous posts there are issues building a 273 including. Head gaskets would be a makeshift solution.
I’m willing to have the work done but I don’t want to have $7500 in 273 that won’t run right when a...
First the car…..1965 Barracuda
09 30 65 build date
Block casting 11 5 1965
Assembly stamp on block B273 11 19
It has the 1965 heads with the narrow bolt angle
Does this make sense for an original block? Or is it a 1966 block due the B stamp and late casting and assembly date?
The engine...
Well that’s all pretty clear. 3 on the tree. Sounds like the floor shift hump is an easy graft/weld and the factory pretty much used the same method. Thanks everyone.
I have a 1966 Barracuda with the fender tag showing it was originally a 3 speed car. It’s been converted to a 4 speed A833 with an aftermarket Indy shifter (right photo). My question is were there originally 3 speed floor shift cars, or were all 3 speeds column shift?
The transmission tunnel...
FYI the 8 3/4 was first available in 1966 (at least in A bodies) and I’ve heard they’re hard to find. I believe the axles are narrower than any other 8 3/4. Moser Engineer makes a replacement for $4,500 (ouch) I think.
The 7 1/4 axles won’t handle more than a built 273 engine. Which is fine...
Anyone know where I can get a wood grain wheel restored? I have 4 on cars and they are all worn. They still look OK but an original finish would be way cooler.
