Awesome thanks everyone for the help. Makes much better sense now. One last question. Is there any way to tell what gears I have without opening the rear end? I can tell you that I have a 8 3/4 read end but can’t remember what gears they put in it.
AWWW that makes sense. So for example, since I have the red one which is 36 tooth I need to make sure the notch lines up in the correct spot with the Speedometer Housing Sleeve and transmission. I just went to look and I don't see an arrow. But I do see a small pin in the bottom of the housing...

I have a 318 motor in my 1974 Plymouth Duster. It has been rebuilt when we did a restoration on it. I am thinking about switching it out to a 392. Anyone have any idea what a used 318 motor goes for in socal? It has about 100k total miles on it.
