Maybe a chunk of grease or crud in the box that pulling on the wheel/shaft knocked loose/broke up?

I remember having a mid-70's Dodge van with a 6. Had a 20 mile drive to work in these lovely Wisconsin winters. Had a spare radiator from a Volare.. cut off the trans cooler and mounted it ahead of the drivers seat rails. Didn't help as much as I thought it would, still had to use a blanket. :)
