So my question is this...How often should the oil pump drive gear be replaced?
I have just built my 318 and other than the distributor and the oil pump gear, everything is new...
I am experiencing a miss situation when I keep the car at a constant speed or take my foot off the gas...POP-PA-POP.
The car accelerates fine, but when just cruising it does this.
I am working on getting a new distributor, I just wondered if the drive gear could be bad..The old motor did the same thing before I took it out.
If I need to change the gear..will I have to take off the intake to do it?
I imagine there might be a special tool to grab hold of the gear through the distributor hole.
The motor details are:
318 bored .040 over.
KB Pistons
273 forged crank
"302" heads
comp 268 cam..pretty sure on the number...maybe 286.
edelbrock performer manifold
edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl
Electronic ignition
factory manifolds dual flowmaster
4 speed trans
65 Barracuda
Sorry this is so wordy...sometimes I just can't stop myself !!

Any ideas on the gear replacement or miss situation would be great!

I was hoping someone had some ideas on this...Every one of the small blocks has this part. Does anyone ever change it? Is it something that is always changed during a rebuild? Do they go bad? I dont have a roller motor. Standard pump up lifters and rockers.

FWIW if your rebuilding a 40 year ol moder.....replace with new.....I do :glasses7:

yes,,,,get a big flat tip screw driver...turn the intermediate shaft clock wise..it will walk up the gear...and then you can get it with a pair of long nose pliers...

went you install it ...you will need to walk it around until you get it where you want it...it would be best if you set the engine to NO.1 firing TDC before you remove it

please note which way the slot is pointing....you should try to get it to point the same.

unless the slot that the distributor rides in is extremely worn ..dont see it causing your ignition problem...as the gear is turned by the camshaft....

sounds like the
p ickup coil in the dist to make it act like your saying a new one is about 25 bucks at nappa the last time i replaced one hope this helps

Are the pick up coils for electronic ignition pretty much the same. I don't know what this distributor originally came out of. Does it matter or can I just tell them I need a pick up coil for a mopar electronic distributor?
It sounds a lot cheaper than getting a new drive gear and a new distributor.

sometimes you can find a tag with a number on it but i think they are mostly the same just take a pic with you and compare it with the new one
