I'm close to the point of installing the rear half of the car in my Demon build and I need to decide between a 8 3/4" or a Dana 60. (with all the goodies of course)
This is a Street/Strip car. I currently have 275/60-15 Nitto 555 Drag Radials for the street and will use slicks at the track.
I'm leaning towards a 60 for strength, but was wondering about the 8 3/4 with a nodular center, which would allow me to swap ratios easily for the occasional road trips.

Is the 8 3/4 strong enough?

No trans brake. Engine is a 496 stroker with both Horsepower and Torque in the 650 range without the 150-200 shot of nitrous

Go with the 60, not only stronger but I think the traction from a little more rear weight will help too.

What are running or gonna run a 4.30? or something in that range with those tires?

Thanks, I was leaning towards a Moser 60 with a locker anyway, but was curious about the 8 3/4 with some of the new parts now available for them.

Dave, I'm going to run a 4.10

when you shop or a dana 60, find one from a 1967-72 ford 1/2 ton pickup.
they are the lightest and have passenger car ends on, them. the axle splines are same as a mopar. just weld mopar ends on, and add mopar axles, change spring pads also. this unit is 32 # heavier over the 8 3/4 unit. also, dana/spicer has the correct front yoke for it, 7290 or 1350 spicer. I would use the 1350. ps, the dana will not slow you down.

Being you are going to weld new ends on it anyway you can use any dana 60 being they all have 3" axle tubes. The dana 60 has spline counts ranging from 16 to 35 so you have to look. Being you are going big inch big block 35 spline is what I would use. That Moser 60 will be a good piece.

I am with Chuck, go with the Dana. 8 3/4 is plenty stout to handle your application, but what do you plan in the future? The other thing is 8 3/4 has plenty of steel street gears available, but the only Pro Nickel gear available is the 4.86. Dana 60 you can get whatever size gear you like in steel or pro. There are just alot more options with the dana, it is stouter, and it will cost the same money to build...Just my 2 cents...Lee
