73 Duster Restoration

-
Yes, Im going to do jams, engine compartment and trunk too. Im kinda debating changing the color seeing I have to redo the entire interior and the green seat covers are the most expensive. May as well switch it all to black.

Im considering doing it white or red.

I personally love the green and maybe you could switch the interior to black and keep the paint green?

Im sure I will change my mind 100 time before I start laying color, LOL

I ordered the headlight hardware and the rod locks. Still need to get the window rollers

It will probably stay green. Its easiest seeing Im not doing everything at once.

I've located the dried up interior panels from a local member, Picked up a thermoquad for a 73 -340, and found a set of headers.

Adam, last year I priced that exhaust kit,Jegs was 30 to 40 bucks cheaper.Might check both before you order.

Have you priced having it done locally? I have to get all new on my Ram when I get back since the factory cat is stopped up so I am having new ran from the headers back.

There is one good shop around here and he will be 2xs as much for a compression bent exhaust and will argue over doing 2.5" over the axle.

Started the 4bbl swap yesterday using all stock 73-340 parts. Couldnt get once of the carb studs off of the 2bbl intake so I have to pick something up. Also forgot to pick up a set of valve cover gaskets. Not sure how the old ones werent leaking, They were as hard as a rock.

I also had 2 plug wires fall apart so I ordered a new set of orange Mopar Perf. wires.

Its a pretty expensive swap to do using stock parts but I like the little details and the stock look. A quick price run down

Stock 73-340 intake $80 (had left over from the Hang 10 disaster)
Stock 73-340 Thermoquad, Picked up from a member $90
Stock 72 -340 air cleaner Came with the car figure $150
4bbl throttle bracket, kick down linkage and cable. Came with car Ive seen them here for $100

$420 just for the big stuff.

Other Parts needed
Intake gaskets
Bypass hose
RTV sealant
Vacuum caps
carb stud
carb bolts
valve cover gaskets
coolant
Spark plug wires (for when the old ones fall apart - oops)

This is going to be the only mod I make to the car for now. Time to get back to body work,

Why no pics? I love watching your work.

Yeah, I know. I forgot to bring the camera out with me and was affraid if I went in to get it I would never get back out of the house.

I did the Summit exhaust system and agree...sounds great...passenger side with Heddman headers was a pain...but the price was right.

Paul

Ive decided to stick to stock manifolds so Im not gonna bother touching the exhaust yet when I do I may save up and go with a TTI kit.

New wires came in. The orange Mopar Perf wires are nice but a bit short. The car started right up but it idles a bit high and drops low when you put it in gear so Im thinking theres a vacuum leak someplace.

Picked a gallon of Evaporust yesterday. Im trying to do something with the rust on the roof and trunk lid without grinding the crap of it. My plan was to spray the evaporust on the roof and cover it with plastic to keep it from evaporating over night. Didnt work, LOL

Rust 3, Adam 0. So far Ive tried 80 grit DA disc which work but are taking for ever. Then I tried some SEM Rustmort which is a converter. That worked ok but made a mess and etched the crap out of any clean metal it touched (full of acid) The Evaporust did seem to do anything over night except flash rust anything it dripped on.

So some 36 grit grinding disc and 40 grit DA disc are on deck.

lol its used for soaking parts

When I researched the Evap-O-Rust there were several sites that had acrticles where people set up a pump to pump it into the parts. They just kept it running on the parts for about 24 hours and they were getting good results. But it would be hard to soak a large panel and keep it running down so that it could be recirculated.

EDIT: If you guys remember my Duster "build" I have several parts I restored with it. I had really good results with it but I too soaked it for about 24 hours. Look up the My free Duster thread in the resto section.

Retorqued the intake and carb bolts and its running good again but the throttle seems a bit sticky. It may just be the return springs are a bit long. I still need to find the correct kick down linkage.
