Help!! When installing cam during engine build cam timing mark/dot should be at 6 position and crank at 12 correct? Does this set up #6 to be in the firing position? Seems #1 is not in the firing position at this point on my motor when set this way. Is this right? .
 
Trusting the marks on the gears is such a crap shoot. I'd strongly suggest degreeing it in so you know for sure.
But if not...........
Take the chain off , rotate crankshaft until #1 is at TDC ......the mark on the crank gear should be at 12:00 , but verify this by noting the position of the piston. Easy with the heads off , not too difficult with them on. Just put a screw driver in the spark plug hole and SLOWLY move the crank back and forth until you are certain that the piston is as high in the bore as it is gonna get.
Take a couple tries , and make sure the screw driver isn't binding anywhere while you do this.
Then put the gear on the cam and locate the dot at 6:00.
Remove cam gear , install chain and hope the manufacturers of your timing set were very good the day they made yours.
 
So is it true that #1 is not the firing position (both lifters low in the bore on the cam) when the marks/dots are aligned 6 on the cam and 12 and the crank? Mine shows and from what I read #1 is not in the firing position but #6 is. True??
 
True. Dot to dot on a small block is #6TDC. Cam at 12:00 and crank at 12:00 is #1TDC.
But put a degree wheel on it to make sure everything is where it should be. They are inexpensive($100) from Summit and worth the trouble.
 
dot to dot is both 1 and 6 at TDC.

Crank at 12, cam at 6:00 is #6 firing, when both dots are at the 12:00 position it's #1 firing
 
Thanks for the good info guys. Sure nice having this knowledge around. I put it in with crank at 12 and cam at 6, then I rotated it to both at 12 so I can have #1 firing for the distributor stab and rotor point at #1 cylinder. Thanks so much.
 
Actually, you could have the cam at 6:00 or 12:00 with the crank at 12:00. You would just have to rotate the distributor 180 degrees.
