hughes retro fit lifters PROBLEMS

Dod not buy huges retro fit lifters nothing but problems
they cost me 3000 dollars to remove and replace with any lifter but hughes
 
What went wrong? I just installed a set in my 360 with a head swap and now you are making me nervous.

it was hughes fault you had high oil pressure?
 
I'm confused...other than don't buy them

reading this gives me a headache.........still don't get it.

Oil was not coming out lifter bore
lifters would not pump up when running
changing the preload change the sound of motor but did not go away
first change oil pump ran MOTOR ON DYNO still had loud lifters
change lifters fixed problem, much much less preload 1/4 turn lifters vs 2 turn lifters{ preload}
 
did you or your engine builder follow their instruction for setting preload?

How much spring pressure were you running over the nose of the cam? Were the same pushrods used with both sets of roller lifters?
 
Huh, When I put my Hughes lifter's in, I called and asked how much preload. Told them I had about .080", and the guy said that was about right. Didn't get a sheet like was posted or anything. Guess I have too much preload and will be looking at some shorter pushrods.
 
You said in the other thread that you adjusted lifter preload two turns down. That's a boatload.
 
I agree, that's why I called them and asked what the preload should be and told them what I had. Always felt that was a bunch. The .020-.025" from the link sounds much more reasonable.

The guy even said something about roller lifters needing more preload (as I recall).

Definitely going to look into this soon.
 
I don't buy it. The mechanism in a hydraulic lifter I think is the same regardless. I suppose the reason maybe because the roller has much more aggressive lobes, but I cannot see it. I love solid lifters.
 
I wasn't really comfortable with it either, but wasn't going to argue with someone at Hughes that (I thought) had more experience with them than I did. Funny that now there is an instruction sheet and the numbers on it are more inline with what you posted way back when I asked (over 2 years ago). It doesn't seem to have been a problem, but I've never felt great about it.

I just figured with the different mass and perhaps maybe a longer body, that it was different for a roller lifter than a flat tappet. Now I don't think so. I agree that it doesn't make any sense that the hydraulic part of the lifter would be any different, but I wasn't building them either.
 
As I'm reading some of these threads it seems that more people are having issues with these lifters. I just put a set in, I have a magnum (IMM prepped) headed la block. Hughes Pedestal magnum roller rockers and the Hughes aka Morels/Callies lifters. They seem to be to loud for me but I do not know what they should sound like, these have approx .080" preload. Would this be considered normal from this video. The engine is a fresh rebuild with 170 miles on it. This is also done with a iphone.

Just watched the video. I have no experience with roller cams, but have run solids before. That sounded to me like the lifters were bouncing on the cam. I never heard rockers make that much noise. I want to run a solid roller on my next engine, but really not sure what would be the best parts to use would be.
 
I'm using Hughes hydraulic roller lifters in my engine which I believe are Cranes, but that said, I've always adjusted them to just about 1/2 turn from zero preload as per Daves instructions. They sound fine and no problems so far.
