Hey guys I need your help. I picked up a 360 with tranny from a 78 diplomat
my problem is I cannot tell what size the tranny is. The #'s I found on driver side of housing are PK4028815 5904 341. I have looked at numerous sites and several threads and have come up with nothing. I was told it was a (a727), hopefully that is correct. Can anyone help with my odd dilema? Many thanks and lots of appreciation.

The # shows it is in fact a 78 transmission that was used behind a 360 according to this website

But as far as I can see it doesn't differentiate between 904 and 727. But all you have to do is look at the shape of the pan. Here's a couple pics of torqueflite pans. First pic is a 904. Second one is for a 727

I just noticed that at the very bottom of the page in the link it shows a bottom view of a 904 and 727.

BTW: unless your planning real high hp a 904 can take a lot of abuse so don't be dismayed if it's not a 727

pans the key. 727 has a little "extra" on a corner, 904 doesnt. Now a 904/998/999 is another story. I know the lock up trans have a smooth "reservoir tip" on the input shaft :)

Yep. That's a good mention too. Here's a picture comparing a lock up to a non-lock up. The lock up is the top picture

Glad to help. At that power level you'll be fine with a 904 and the best part is it's more efficient, takes less hp to spin it's guts. That means more HP to the pavement :burnout:
