I am looking for a 96-2001 Neon for a daily driver.I prefer a 5 speed because it will be a little easier on gas and if there are any tranny issues it may be easier or cheaper to repair. My question is how do the auto trannys hold up in the cars?I have seen a handful on Cragislist that are autos and need trannys.

Thanks,Jim

Hold out for a 5 speed. Much more fun to drive. I'm in the same boat and if I have to drive a little car, it MUST be a stick!

Yup. Wait for a 5 speed. I just bought a 99 neon with at 2.4 swap auto last Friday. Had it not been for the fact that a completely rebuilt 2.4 with 8k miles was swapped in I woulda waited for a 5 speed. This thing is really fun because of the power but they didn't have true o/d autos till 01. Mine has a lockup torque converter and it cruises at 2600-2700rpm at 60 mph. Supposedly it's still suppose to get 27 city. I'll calculate this tank n comment on here on what I got.

Up to 2000 they had 3 speed auto which was junk. In 2001+ they started using a 4 speed auto which is slightly better.

The manual trans is much better.

I got 200K out of the automatic in mine, swapped it for a 100K unit that's now 225K. It's always had a little morning sickness when it gets cold out, and now that I type this, it's probably going to ****, but.....

The only recurrent issue is a bad ground to the TC lockup solenoid throwing CEL's and I'm too lazy to fix it. From 100K to 175K miles, I was routinely getting 31 mpg on a commute that regularly ran between 80-90mph.
My buddy just got a 5-speed '96, and he's getting 32 mpg, 28 city. My motor's about done and it's still going 200 miles to the half-tank mark, turning 25mpg in the city.

i've got a95 3sp auto and a 2005 4sp auto i'm looking to get ride of in wantagh new york. any interest? let me know. joel 516 6627327

Hey Jos51700, what year you got? If you're gettin that mpg at that speed with a 3 speed I've got a feeling I'm gonna like mine better than I thought!

I had a 98 5spd and when it died I found a 2000 real cheap.... 3spd auto I HATE IT EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY. It constantly is trying to figure out what gear it wants to be in and shifts constantly on hills. It still does good on gas though but night and day difference between the two.

There is a good bit of information out there about swapping neons to 5spd if your so inclined.

If you buy an '01 and up, most common auto trans failure is due to coolant contamination, these rads are famous for leaking coolant into trans cooler. Best thing to do is remove trans cooler lines from rad and install remote cooler, but don't forget to run a small line to loop cooler fitting on rad together.

OK Thanks Guys it looks like a 5 speed for me.I did buy a 98 Neon R/T new with a 5 speed it went 180K miles and I gave it to my son.Looking for a work car because my daily driver now is a V8 and I have to drive 28 miles one way to work.
