Now that my 6 speed swap is done I need to replace the 4 speed carpet since the hole for the shifter is in a new position. I've looked around at several of the places that have been mentioned on the forums and have found one that offers carpets in varying colors and materials as opposed to just stock. Since my build has largely turned into a resto-mod kind of thing I was thinking about updating the carpet to the newer cut pile material as opposed to the old 80/20 loop since originality doesn't really matter much anymore on the build. I was curious if anyone else had put cut pile in an old ride and had pictures. I've ordered some samples for color and material, but I don't think I'll get a good sense of what it would look like in the car with just little 2"x2" squares, so I was hoping someone out there had done it already.

Cut Pile in my Challenger. It looks nice but it was a mistake. It should have the 80/20 in it. When/if this carpet wares out, 80/20 will be going in.

I think part of my issue is that the carpet I put in the first time either didn't fit very well or I wasn't patient enough putting it in. Just kind of sloppy and doesn't fit the contours very well. Don't think I have it far enough forward up the firewall, but ran out of overlap between the front and back, so it had to stay where it was. I've heard that the cut pile forms a little nicer, but I guess some of that might be the company doing it. Thanks for the picture! Any particular reason you didn't like the cut pile? Just didn't look right in an old car or other complaints?

I'm debating a color change while I'm at it. Car is silver with black interior, thinking about a charcoal or dark grey carpet as opposed to black since I have grey seats as well.

My car had cut pile when I bought it. I think loop looks better,

Well, ended up trying out the cut pile myself. I like it for this setup, but then again the whole car has a little bit of "new" flavor because of the 5.7 Hemi and the T56. I also think I'm glad I didn't go full on black. I think it would have been mighty dark overall and would have shown everything. The color I ended up going with is "ebony", though I'd almost call it more of a charcoal. They actually have a charcoal, but it's got some brown/green or something in it I just didn't quite like. Got it from stockinteriors.com.

Was there enough carpet to go over the new hump or did you ask to leave it long on each side so you could get it over the hump?

Sorry, I didn't see this post again until now. Sometimes the threads I've replied to don't show up for some reason.

The Challenger was a stock restoration. I thought I read somewhere that E-bodies went to "cut-pile" after 71 but that's not correct. After I had the carpet purchased, I found out it was not correct. It looks fine...just not correct for a 73.

A lot of the problem with bad fit is that the carpet has been rolled up and stored in a box and has lost it's shape. Mine isn't perfect but it fit decent. As soon as it arrived, I took it out of the box and laid it out. It was sitting in my basement for months like that until I was ready for it.

I had plenty of material in front and on the sides.

Didn't ask for any extra (didn't really think about it either) since I know most run a little large. It was a little close on the edges, but I still had some to trim. Probably about 1-1.5" extra I took off. I took it out of the box the day I got it and let it sit around for a few days (waiting on the weekend anyway) to let it rebound a little into the formed shape. Picked the warmest day I was going to get (made it into the 60's) and set it on the driveway while I pulled the old stuff out to get some sun on it to heat it up. I knew going in my new tunnel would mess with things some, but overall it's not bad.

Tunnel design has a lot to do with it. I took out a 4 speed hump that was put in perhaps less than professionally, so I had a little more gap to fill with my new tunnel. I have pretty much no metal working tools aside from a cutoff wheel and a body saw. Formed most of my piece with my leg and hands, so it's even less professional than what I took out. Leaves some good room around the trans though, so I figured the carpet would be a little sloppy. The footpad looks like it's just creeping up the side of the tunnel a bit, which I sort of figured it might since the tunnel is taller. The back where the two pieces overlap between the seats isn't the snuggest fit (don't have it pulled tight to the floor), but it actually looks better kind of loose. My tunnel has to stay pretty tall for the shifter then angles down pretty sharp right behind it, so the carpet really isn't formed for that. A little heat and steam might help to conform it, but I'm just letting it ride for now. A console or bench side would hide most of my issues.

Cut pile is harder to vacuum and harder to get stains out of. It pulls in dirt easier than loop and wears out faster. I would never get it.
