I'm looking for some recommendations on a reliable company to ship my new baby. I just pulled the trigger on a 1972 Swinger and need to have it shipped from Gambrills Maryland to Seattle Washington. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I've never shipped a car, so this may not apply, but I have done lots of shipping and receiving through my business. One thing I have learned... Avoid using any freight company that "interlines" with another company to complete the delivery.

This may not be possible in all cases, but there are several large shippers that cover huge regions of the US. The problem is if and when there is shipping damage. If there is more than one shipper involved, they will all try to pass the buck, sometimes to the third party. It can take weeks to get resolved.

I would be willing to drive it out for you. I have a vehicle in Seattle that needs to come out east and I am right next to Maryland. Is your new car reliable enough and have a gear ratio in the rear that would be somewhat highway friendly? Pm me if you are interested.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

It cost me $500 to have my son's valiant shipped from VA to Detroit, MI back in 2007. I can't remember who we used, but there were some issues.

the seller claimed that the car would start cold. The shipper missed a couple of shipping dates when they couldn't get it started. The kid we bought it from had to go to the shipping yard to help them get it started to load it up. When we went to pick it up at the local shipping "depot", we had trouble getting it started. Drained out at least 3 of those portable jump starter "boxes". Finally got it started, then it died. Had trouble getting it started again, and after almost giving up, we finally got it started, then would not turn it off until we got home. The kid did not have any kind of choke hooked up, and we ended up changing the carb also.

The battery looked pretty new, but was junk. We tried a few more batteries, and they couldn't get it going. Finally got a Die Hard gold and it started. Some of those "aftermarket" batteries are not very good....

National quoted me $795 just last Wednesday to ship from Seattle-to-Tampa. Never leaves the truck until it arrives at destination.

I used DAS auto shippers to ship the car I bought off eBay from Cali to NY. They picked the car up at the sellers house and brought it right to my driveway. The day I put the order in they told me the day it would arrive. Spot on. It cost me $980

Drive it out, what better way to get acquainted to your baby. Why own car like that if your not gonna DRIVE it.

I have had horrorable shippers in the past. DO NOT USE A BROKER.They lie about everything, while saying yes to all your needs. Find a company that will ship door to door or you may find your car is sitting in some warehouse waiting for someone,, anyone,, to finish the delivery. Reliable Carriers was the best for me with the least amount of headaches.Again make sure that you DO NOT SPEAK TO A BROKER.
Enclosed shipping that distance will be more than $1 a mile.Even open trailer shipping will be at least $1 a mile.
I ship Dodge diesel trucks from Las Vegas to Pittsburgh several times a year. PM me and I will give you the name of the company. They travel coast to coast and are a moving company that will take vehicles.

I'm in the same boat I have a car in AZ that doesn't run and need it brought to MD maybe we can get several people to go in and get a package deal I don't mined traveling some distance to pick it up. just a thought. I'm with Darter6 brokers will run you around on price and delivery days and time.

RELIABLE .... orange semis... in haggerty magazines... we use them at work all the time /

Acting as the owner's agent, I've shipped a few exotics for work. The best of the bunch I've worked with are Dependable Auto Shippers, Thomas C. Sunday, Horseless Carriage, Waggoners, and Intercity Lines. Never had a problem shipping or receiving with any of these. I've never shipped an inert car, so I can't comment on that aspect of it.

Just because the car makes it on the truck does not mean it will remain on the truck. Often it has been necessary to move a car on the back to get at a car located in the front of the trailer. I've never seen a driver for any of the companies listed above mishandle a car.

There are two other options you may wish to consider. First is renting a truck and trailer and driving across country. Another avenue is Uship. With Uship, the shipper is basically buying unused space on a truck. IIRC you can specify enclosed transport. Prices are favorable, but you need to be ready to go at a moments notice, and you may not get what you expect. Did it once with a car, did not specify but got an enclosed trailer. Price was about half what Reliable quoted me. Car was gone within two hours, delivered without damage the next day. (~ 800 miles away). www.uship.com
