Hello everyone, first time post here!
I Have a 68 barracuda fb, Man, no one sells 3.23 only 3.55. I now have 3.91 and can safely run about 47mph. Engine rpms sounds like running about 3000-3500 ANYONE know who sells a 3.23? Would love to take a day trip every now and then on the hi way,lol

Also 318/904 from an 85 fifth ave, the 85 cable doesn't have the slip on style for the 68 speedo, it has a screw on!
The 68 cable doesn't have the slip in with retainer at the 85 trans end, it's a screw on

3.23's aren't real popular in the aftermarket but you see used ones advertised quite a bit. What rearend? If you have a 8-3/4 I bet someone would gladly trade you straight across their 3.23 3rd member for your 3.91's.

Change the adapter in the trans. to the older style. It's a direct bolt in. The only thing you have to watch about is matching up the right gear for the speedometer to be accurate and getting it clocked right in the trans. The gear slips into the back of the adapter.

Sorry, yes its an 8.75/489 housing. How much different would the 3.55 be compared to 3.91? Doesnt sound like alot, could i atleast run 60 for a long period of hiway without stressing the engine and trans? Not looking to make it a hot rod/street racer, just want to cruise around, take weekend trips somewhere every now and then. Is that your `cuda? what gears are you running?

You can find calculators on the web that will tell you RPM @ speed depending on rear end and tire size

There's a pretty big difference between 3.91's and 3.55's. My car had 4.10's in it when I got it. Man they suck for the hwy. At 60 it sounded like the engine was going to come apart. I put in 3.55's and they do great on the hwy at 60. At 70 their humming a little bit but not terrible. We frequently go to a car cruise that's 40 miles down the hwy and run 70 all the way. That first link in Poison Dart's post is my favorite calculator but you have to remember to put in your tire size accurately and if your car is an automatic dial in some torque converter slip. 7-8% slip is a decent converter. I mentioned inputting the tire height because it makes a big difference on cruise rpm also. The factory tires were real short. Stick as tall of a tire as you can get under the wheel well safely and it'll lower the cruise rpm just like gears do.

I have two sets for sale in the "for sale" section of the forum if you are interested.
