I have a 68- 383 that came with my barracuda.
Was locked up, was told was a new rebuild that went bad on the start up.
Then left to sit for a few years and some how got water in a cylinder. After breaking down the engine. Seems story is true. Still had break-in grease on parts.
It was bored 40 over.
I'm wondering if I rebuild this block... How far can I go on a bore if it needs it?
60 over+?
I've heard you can go pretty far safely. Any truth to that?

The only way to know for sure is to have a reputable machine shop do a sonic check on the block.

I think .060 would be safe just to go ahead and do. But as mentioned, the only way to know just how far it can go is sonic checking.

Why not just get a 400 block and build that? I am running a forged 383 crank in my 400. I am assuming it is not the original motor for your barracuda.

Agreed, my 69 440 went .060. No problems.

how much would that cost? vs. just having it or another one bored? They all but give away 383's.

I can get one installed at the shop I use here for 125. That's sleeve, labor and all.
