this could explain why I was having so much trouble filling fuel filters and it running so bad?

Now you can Sleep !

Well ? Now I'm up looking on line for a new tank. My plane at first was to restore the old one, but goodness that thing is shot! That sending unit is only good for taking pictures of.
Anyays, i'm looking at prices from $77 to $400 for a tank? And a sendinng unit from $40to $79.

I got a new ebay sender for $29, 3/8 with a return bung to boot. fill that tank with a gallon of pool acid and shake it up and let stand for 30 minutes, dump and repeat. refill with a box of baking soda and a gallon of distilled water and rinse. Might bring it back to useable condition. Run you 10 bucks and an hour.

I've also been told nuts & bolts- a chunk of chain ect... i think the pictures don't do it justice of how bad it is!

Don't blame just the wet climate, I,m in Arizona and I have pulled gas tanks that look just like your's.

Good luck!!

If the tank is not leaking then reseal it. In my coronet tank the gas was gelled in the bottom. If I remember correctly I used the Eastwood gas tank kit. It will take some time to really clean the insides of the tank first. If the rust holes are through the tank then replace instead or specialty shop if really rare tank.

edit: The sender is trashed.

I've seen new tanks with new sending units for $200 including shipping on eBay.
With all of the aggregation this old nasty one has given you it seems like $200 is a good investment for nice new stuff.

Good time to consider replacing fuel lines. At very least, blow out/flush through.

well I found a tank on rock auto for 179 shipped and a sending unit for $40. I called summit and have them price match and the stuff is on its way. I will try and refurbish the filler neck the best I can. I was wondering if it needs that little tongue that sticks out the end of it? It's so corroded I'd just like to cut it out and maybe even the tip of that thing off?

Why not soak the filler neck in that WD4o evap o rust product and see what it looks like after. I don't think it would be a good idea to cut the piece out of the neck it allows for an air space so the tank can fill properly.

Ya, i was thinking about a wire brush, and some kind of rust kill goop.

About 40 years ago I had a tank just about that nasty boiled out at a Radiator shop. I don't know how long that repair lasted because I sold the car shortly thereafter.
