I have just installed a newly rebuilt 8 3/4 3:55 center chunk in my 71 dart . So far so good after the break in BUT I have noticed a howl at around 60-70 mph under load. below this nothing, slightly above nothing........any thoughts would be appreciated, it wasn't cheap. :banghead:

Which gears are in it. I have read that some of the newer gears are prone to it.

Is your end play adjustment is correct?

.008 to .018 on the end play, the last two I set up I shot for .010....

If the end play is to loose, maybe you have some bearing noise.

Did you heat cycle the gears when breaking it in?

yes, 15 mins on the jack stands, cool, drive 5 mile/cool, etc right turns, left turns, I was pretty good about it.

15 mins on jack stands isn't a heat cycle.

15 miles in stop and go, nothing over 60 for 4 series and up, then cool completely, repeat and then do as you please.

Richmond gear, told us, never to run gears on stands, it causes hot spots on gears. they have to be run under load!!! the gears are slapping each other on free run like that. prob how the howl got started!! I hope your end play is about back lash?? should be at .010. this is ring gear lash.

I was referring to axle end play. He never said whether the unit was done by him or someone else.

Dump the fluid and fill with conventional 85w140. I like Torco
RGO. Mine had VERY slightly noise, after the change it's pretty quiet.
