Working on the rad, cleaning, getting ready for paint. But I can see some calcium on the tubs, safe to pore CLR,over night than flush out.Cant afford a re-core as yet.

would help i have also used (warning applies) muratic acid on a radiator out of car. plugged left it sit for a couple then flooded washed etc.

CLR is bad for AL solder!

"Can I use CLR to clean out my radiator?

No, CLR should not be used on a car radiator for two reasons. First, CLR may not be compatible with the internal metals of the radiator. Second, it could have adverse effects if the CLR is not rinsed out completely."

A radiator shop near me used to clean out and pressure test a carry in radiator. I think the cost was something like $40.

I agree that vinegar would probably help if you don't want to use harsh chemicals or have it rodded out. You ever throw a chicken bone in vinegar overnight? Turns to rubber - kinda comical.

I would stick with automotive cooling system chemicals. You don't want to use something that might damage the radiator.

I was having overheating issues with a nearly new Spectra radiator It had been on the car less than 18 months and was showing signs of being crudded up. As a last resort I used CLR to flush it out, which did the trick and cleaned the radiator HOWEVER it did blow a hole in my heater matrix and I had coolant dripping into the passenger foot well.

Turned out the overheating wasn't due to the radiator after all. On the following test drive it threw the fan belt and a new one (correctly tightened) solved the overheating! Now i just need to swap out the heater matrix but being that the car is a convertible and lives in Florida there's no real rush on that.
