Members Online Now, Question?

When viewing the Members Online Now, section on the right of the screen page, it lists how many members are online, guests, and something called "robots"
What the heck is, are, robots?
I haven't a clue.
What does that mean anyway.
Never heard that before.
Care to enlighten an old man here.

robots are automated website scanners -- used by things like Google --- so they can figure out what's on a page for search listings
 
Once upon a time I was a op' in a file sharing hub. We had a 'bot that did the typical things like deny log in to banned members, kick members for spamming, etc... We could direct that 'bot too. As in tell it to flood a members connection, send packet bombs, screw up their pc to the point of blue screen.
