They'll fit, but, no, you can't go wider. A 5.5" wide rim is the minimum width recommended for a 215/70/14. A 225/70/14 has a minimum recommended rim width of 6". Can you fit one on a 5.5"? Sure. But you'll have to find someone that wants to ignore the manufacturer's specs to mount it, and you could end up with abnormal tire wear. I'm sure it's been done, but that doesn't make it right.
Agree with Blu. They look nice and chubby on a 5.5" rim. They would really be pinched in on a narrower rim -- the tread is 8 inches wide.

Ha! Looks like a tight squeeze, all right. While I was there some clueless tourist got his SUV with a roof rack jammed. I mean, just look at that hole -- does it look like a 2-car garage door? what was he thinking?
