Hello there,

I recently purchased a 1971 Plymouth Duster from another fabo member here on the forum. This will be my first very restoration and my first A-body. The car has an 8 3/4 rear end with a 489 casting differential housing. The suspension was rebuilt along with the brakes. The whole underbody was coated with por 15 and it is in great shape. The exterior is in pretty good shape with virtually no rust and some dents here and there. There has been some body work done, however. The dash and door panels are in excellent condition. The seats have some mold on them but are in really good shape. The car is in a somewhat disassembled shape. It needs a gas tank, gears, engine, trans, rear tailight panel, front and rear glass, and little odds and ends. It came with a 5.9 magnum but i'm not completely sure if i'm going to use it or not. I'm thinking I will organize and prep the trim, seats, interior pieces, etc... for winter storage and get to work on an engine and trans. I would really love to build a 318 la(I loved my 318 in my ram 1500) for this duster and maybe throw a rebuilt a904 or 727 behind it. Then I will redo the interior hoping to keep a stock look. After that I will throw in the glass and get the bodywork and paint done. I am going to have it painted the original color with the original pin stripe.

A 318 over a 5.9 Magnum? Is you crazy? Nice car, btw.

Welcome from a fellow Illinois resident :) Looks like a nice project

Welcome to FABO...

You have a good car to start with...

What part of IL are you in???

I know a guy with a 318 for sale in IL....

Looks like a great starting point! Couple of my pennies thrown in, I would stay with the 5.9 mag (360) and do the 904 with a shift kit, you will not regret it. With the proper parts and mods a 904 will take anything a naturally aspirated small block will through at it.

I am from Mt. Zion Ill, where bouts do you hale from?

I hail from Danville which is about 30 min. east of Champaign where the U of I is located. I guess it just doesnt seem right to throw a 360 magnum behind a car that didnt have a 360 option in 1971. Maybe I am crazy. Most likely I will end up keeping the 360. After all, it did come with headers, a holley 4 barrel carb, and a windage tray.

Have had my 904 for over thirty years. Get your rebuild kit from A&A trans just south of Indy. 317-831-3066. Get the sprag kit and a few other of there custom mad parts and you can have a lighter, smaller trans that will take anything that 360 will hand out as long as you keep the oil cool. Have them send a catalog. I run high 12s with mine. 904 doesn't wast as much power as a 727. Talk to them before you buy your used transmission. They will answer your questions and not try to sell you something you don't need. They have complete 904, 727s. But consider the a, A518. It is a 727 with overdrive built in and you can get a locking converter for good gas mileage. Shop around. Have fun. The people at Turbo-Action are good too.
