few weeks ago I started it. it was running good but when given a little gas it pop through the driverside header...then quit ran great... yesterday I started it same thing through on the pass side header, idles good but hold it steady at 1500 to 200 it pops periodically..its a mild build, duel points...

My 440 used to pop through the exhaust when my spark plug wires got burnt and started grounding out on the headers.

Check for worn points or incorrect dwell. As the points wear the dwell increases & this retards the ignition timing. In a duel point ignition system it could be just 1 set of points causing it so you'll have to check them both.
Another cause could be if its running too rich and gasses building up in the exhaust & then igniting, maybe by free air getting to the exhaust upstream from a leaking header gasket too.
Dare I say it could be a tight or burnt valve causing it too.(hope not)

thanks, for all the replys, Ill ck this weekend. it funny like I said it started on the driver side then stopped ran great then started it the other day, pop was on the pass side..

i ckd the points looked a little burnt on the outer half edge of the point contact surface.. filed and charged the batt popping gone so far...its raining so test drive later... not sure if that would have caused it or not...

that was my issue, with the popping through the exhaust, does anyone know why point don't wear even.. you would think that the contact surface as flat when new would wear even..

some times the outer arm needs bent to line up correctly. after you file them make sure they are still parallel and clean them with alcohol or nail polish remover.
