hi folks, just thinking of going back to a hood without a hood scoop on my 65 Barracuda... while looking for opinions i came across this old thread

[WANTED] - Air cleaner assembly from a Dakota

with this picture in it
http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/attachments/image-jpg.1714802067/

the guy used a air cleaner assembly from a Dakota or Durango - guess 1997 up models.

Anybody here who done something like this in the past ?

main problem over here in Germany is to find those parts. no chance to find parts like this on a junkyard like in the states.

so i looked for a "Carb/Throttle body - plenum" on ebay and found these Cold-Air-Kits which include this "plenum"
1997-1999 Dodge Dakota 98-03 Durango Cold Air Intake+Aluminum Pipe+Filter Red | eBay
but when i just dig deeper i found out that the opening is 5 1/2" is this true for these Dakota/Durango thing - as a 4 bbl carb would have 5 1/8" afaik

i know there are these so called "carb hats" from Spectere etc, which are mostly used for Superchargers/Turbos etc.... but i´m not willing to spend that much money.

any ideas about this stuff ?

I think it would work, might be a problem with the S bolt used with the Dakota top. The hole for the top might not line up with your carbs bolt for the air cleaner. You can find lots of pics on the net of Dakotas with open air cleaners like you would use on your Cuda. Not sure how much height you would save over a drop base air cleaner though. Those dak top hats are pretty tall. I own a 99 Dakota R/T.

@Lelo Dart, thanks for your reply ... damn didn´t know about that S bolt thing, that cld. be really an issue.

in the meanwhile i received a hint from a fellow here in Germany, that the top hat out of an 5.2 Jeep would fit.

and those Grand Cherokee you can find a lot here just as part cars, maybe this cld be also a way to go... (or simply stay with the hood scoop)

Germany you say?

I used to have a 91 opel kadett with the monster 1.4 in it
I ended up replacing the air cleaner with a 93 opel (can't remember the model) unit that looked the same as the Dakota one your looking at

My point is, look around
and if your still looking by june, hit me up, I'm planning on being in Germany in july

guess it´s time to show what i used in the end and how it looks like....

first i tried to use the efi-top from a Jeep Grand Cherokee - got it for cheap and after cutting out the metal insert it fitted over the air horn (when using a 1,5" spacer ring) but due to cutting the metal insert it was to flexible and also it looked not that good.
so next step was to order that spectre thing which is not cheap but its full metal and looks more trust worthy... adding a 4 inch elbow tube and an open BMC-Aircleaner and voila.. ready to hit the road

Looks good. All kinds of cool stuff going on under that hood! What is that can with the breather on it? Oil catch?

yes - it´s an Oil catch - i know it´s an ongoing discussion about PCV or not etc... i have both sides of the motor connected to that vented oil catch without a PCV.

I used to run this airhat, tube and K&N on my '68 5.9 Magnum. It came off a late model Jeep Cherokee. I found out it only flowed around 600cfm at best. Swapped it out with an aftermarket filter with cold air access that flows nearly double that. I could feel the difference.

You can see my PCV oil separator strapped to the battery in the second pic. Its just a simple water trap for a compressor spliced in the PCV line. It does trap water if the car is driven on lots of short trips where it doesn't get warmed up fully.
