I’m looking at an aluminum bell housing for my Dart. I figured it would go well with one of Jamie’s 5 speeds (when I eventually get one) and save a few more pounds on the car. What is the weight difference between the two bell housings, and are there any downsides to having an aluminum one?

It includes new ball studs and pivot.

Thanks in advance.

I just weighed my 68 10.5" cast iron bell. Its 34lbs raw with no fork, pivot, shields, etc.

Searching around on-line, I see some small block bellhousings described as 9.5 inch and some others (they seem to be later versions) as 10.5 inch.

Are there any concerns with fitment issues? Want to make sure it will work on my Dart.

Thanks again - George

The 10.5 and 9.5 (there is a 11" too for B/RB) are the clutch/flywheel sizes. I don't think a 10.5" clutch/flywheel will fit in a 9.5 bell (I may be wrong). I think the LA 9.5 stuff is early like Pre-67?

I had a 9.25 clutch in my original 67 Commando 273. It was weak and slipped a lot behind a 273. A larger clutch will NOT fit in that BH. Concentrate on finding 10.5 stuff and use that. There are plenty of factory iron and aluminum bells out there that will work.

well, yes, a 10 " clutch from a slant six will fit and bolt up to the 9 1/2 "bolt pattern, also can use the 10" disc. I did that with my 235/273 dart a long time ago. to change to larger bellhousing is a pain. clutch linkage has to be redone, the body seam over firewall has to be flattened, for fit.

My ‘66 273 came with a 9 1/2”, went with a 10” from Brewers after reading on Toolmanmike’s 273 build. I used the stock iron bellhousing, fit like a glove.
