Carb Choice (New 318)

I need help from the experts. With the "new" 318 on the way for the Barracuda, I need to select a carburetor.

The engine is stock other than the cam. Cam specs are Duration@.020 204/214, Lift .420/.443, Lobe separation 112. I intend to use an Edelbrock Performer manifold and the stock 273 exhaust. Ruby has an auto, 2.93 gears and 25" rear tires.

I have been eyeing Edelbrock carbs but am open to suggestions. The car will be a cruiser with no racing aspirations. The primary objective is simplicity without leaving performance on the table.

670 Street Avenger would fill the bill. I have one on my 318 with 2.76/stock converter, works perfect
 
Whatever flavor carb you choose keep the cfm's at 600 cfm's or slightly less. No reason to run a larger carb on a small block unless it's built! 65'
 
Yep, the 600 Edelbrock is my choice. I have one on my 273.

Should be a nice combination.
 
I would go with a Holley 600
Much nicer to work on then eddies
 
I've had great luck with good ol Holley 1850s on that type of combo. You can pick one up for next to nothing too.
 
I always select the biggest carb so it can be used on other projects while working at a gm dealer in 85/86 the astro van we used delivering parts had a 4.3/262cu in.engine 835 cfm Q jets that were adjusted for the 4.3 engine the air door on the secondary side was set tight metering rods were smaller to allow more fuel flow at a smaller opening and had great fuel mileage and power the best of both worlds
 
Holley 600 FTW! Super easy to work on and all major parts stores carry rebuild kits. Can usually find dirt cheap on the Craigslist.

Yep, you can do that with Qjets and Thermoquads.

I got a Eddie 1406 on my plow truck (granted, it's a ford) and a Holley 750 on my duster

If I want to set the floats on the duster, that's 1 screw
On the bronco, it's about a dozen

True that but why do you have to re-set the floats? I do when I rebuild my Edelbeocks and not again. The used 1406 on my 273 has been on basically untouched for 10 years. I don't know how old it was when I bought it. It hasn't been apart for 10+ years. No leaky accelerator pumps, blown out power valves, shrunken metering block or float bowl gaskets.
 
Go stock Carter AFB, if your not looking for date or type matching, reliability plentiful & cheap and rebuild AND all the linkage is already there!

I have a Carter 625 cam on my mildly built 318. This is the AFB style with the 2 step rods. Not the AVS style with 3 step rods. (Air Valve Secondary) It's basically the Eddy 1406 except original Carter build. I downloaded the manual for a 1406 from the Eddy site and used the chart inside for tuning along with an Eddy strip kit from Summit.

I've never pulled spark plugs on any old car and have all 8 looking as perfect as these. 10 years and not a single problem. I can change 2 rods and/or springs in about 5 minutes with no fuel spillage on the intake. Personally, I'll take Carter over Holley any ol day. Mancini Racing usually has remanufactured in stock at a good price if you're interested.
