Remote oil ports. Which is send and which is return??

Which of the 2 remote oil filter ports on the side of the block is the send to oil filter and which is the return?
Also, what would happen if you got these backwards?? Doesn't the filter have a 1 way valve in it?
 
I used a spin on mount for ATF as the trans in my Dakota was high mileage and very dirty, it was marked. Easy to figure out. Just remove the filter and bump the starter for about 1 second. This by the way, is an excellent way to prime a balky pump, as removing the filter...........the very first thing the pump "sees" removes all head pressure and allows the pump to operate freely

I'm fairly certain the filter goes "in" around the outside and out of the center nipple
 
nah theee are 2 side hols with plug on a g3 hemi. not where th filter mounts on the block. that isnwhat he is asking

from what i read the bottom is the feed from the pump so out and into remote filter housing
 
OK, so I removed both lines from the remote oil filter housing and had someone crank the engine several times for about 3 seconds each time. Not a drop of oil from either line. So I put about 2 more quarts of oil in the motor and tried it again. No oil coming out. At this point I think either:
1. The oil pump is shot and needs to be replaced.
2. The pickup has somehow come loose from the oil pump.
I cannot think of any other possibilities. I would have to remove the front cover in either case.
I've never done this before with the motor in the car. I'm wondering if I will need to loosen and drop the pan a little to get access to the pickup. I hope not!
 
If it has sat for awhile, it might need to be primed. It will take awhile if cranking with starter . New build? Or something that's been sitting?

It was a rebuild and it had oil pressure when we started it up. Ran it down the track 4 times before oil pressure went out.
 
So, did it lose oil pressure at the track? Or did you park it for extended period of time, and, then nothing? Sorry for the questions, pieces to the puzzle.

Judging by the orange block with EGR block off on the head, it looks like a 360hp MP 5.7 crate engine. I see you have the TTI filter block off plate, so it's all set for the remote filter. From there, I would tend to bet on a bad oil pump. If I remember correctly, the oil pickup has a bolted flange at the oil pump and then another bolted bracket out near the pickup screen. Unless someone was careless and left those bolts out or loose, it seems likely to me that the pump went out. If the engine is the one I'm guessing above, started as a stock truck engine with a MP intake manifold and throttle body. It would have a 5.7 oil pump and a 6.1 pump would make a nice upgrade for it. Hey, it's wintertime. I'd pull the engine; check for damage; confirm why it lost pressure and upgrade the pump if that is the problem.

4 rounds and all was fine. started it up to make another pass and noticed there was no oil pressure. It sat probably 20 minutes.

Oh, I didn't catch that. I better back up a little. What 5.7 do you have, '08 down or '09 up? Also, when you checked the ports, what do you have on the filter mount, a filter or block off plate?

The block is an '04 truck block. There is a block off plate where the filter mount.
 
I think I would pull a plug from each cylinder and run the starter again. It should spin fast enough to get oil out of the port. If not, time to pull the engine, IMO.
 
I agree with Hellcat. The oil pump is a pretty simple part. Check pick up tube for cracks, tore o-ring where tube goes into pump.

Why would you pull the motor if it has no oil pressure? Wouldn't you just take off the front cover and replace the oil pump?
 
Pickup tube is tied to a main bolt and bolted to bottom of pump. I f you can get pan off in car, then, ok.

It lost oil pressure at the track. It sat for 20 minutes between rounds cooling off. So, not an extended period of time. It made 4 passes with good oil pressure.
