230 Block Question

Bluefish, How do you tell the casting date on your block? Mine has the actual date cast in there, next to the block casting number. Maybe they changed the way they identify it when they changed the main web design? Just noticed, mine is a 230-4, yours is a 230-5

The number after the dash is the number of times the core mold was reconditioned or which mold cavity it came from, depending on who you ask.

And here's an interesting document...they put 400s into some '71 Newports.

Would be fun to find one of these, watch the puzzled looks from vin readers.

NOT rare I know, but I did have a '71 383 2bbl. cast crank SportFury. Makes sense that they would just go ahead and expend the last 383 blocks and offer 400s late in the model year in a big barge like a Newport. Awesome info, thanks!
