So I finally got my 318 stable and running ok. However when I was conducting final visual inspections I noticed some residue between the manifold and cylinder head. Can someone tell me whether this may be a blown gasket or if the manifold wasnt tightened properly. Ive attached some images for reference. 71 dart, 318.

Looks like it might not be a good seal and there’s some blow by?

As far as I know you should only use steel gaskets with cast iron intakes,

Start the engine and squirt some carb cleaner around that area... if there's a leak it will suck it up.

Yes, as stated, you're supposed to use composite style gaskets with aluminum, not steel. They'll never seal.

yeah, I wouldn't use tin gaskets with that aluminum intake. (I don't use them with cast iron intakes either for that matter)

That was my next question, so what exactly Im I looking for when I utilize the carb cleaner. Will it get sucked in as you said?

Post 3, 5, and 6 are the answer. Start wrench'n.

Well thats good to know smh on my part, if for some miraculous reason It does seal with the metal gaskets, will that have any adverse affect on the aluminum heads (will it damage or warp)

Your miracle didn't happen, that is why you posted pictures. I doubt the tin gasket will "hurt" the aluminum. 18 dollar and 2 hour fix.

Im assuming this will also cause a vacuum leak?
could cause leaks in a lot of places. Coolant leaks. Intake port to intake port leaks. Pull air around the port. Pull oil from the valley into the intake ports

IMO, you should start the teardown procedure, but whatever you do, please do not use carburetor cleaner, or any other flammable spray to test for vacuum leaks. Use a squirt bottle full of water instead. The engine runs on FIRE. The last thing you want is a freak backfire and ignition from the carburetor cleaner. I've seen it happen and it wasn't pretty. Your engine isn't my cup of tea with all the bling, but it's nice. It would suck to turn it into a bunch of melted aluminum.

Spraying flammables around a running engine is a bad idea. I had an engine bay light up from doing this very thing. Water is harmless and very effective.

Steel and aluminum are 'dissimilar' metals and there may be some gradual corrosion of the aluminum over the long term. 'specially around the coolant ports.

Thanks, I know I can always count on solid feed back from you guys. Funny I went out and bought carb cleaner, but I guess ill stick with water on a bottle. I wont get around to it till tomm or later in the week, but will give an update on the outcome. Should I go fel-pro or edelbrock on gasket, both around the same price.

FWIW, that shim gasket is THIN. When you go to a paper gasket it's over twice as thick and you may have to mill the manifold faces to get it to fit. That's assuming it fits now.

Had no issues with alignment and fitment, Hopefully I can find one between .040 -.050

Use the Felpro. The Edelbrock gaskets are cheapos.

Good luck with your repair. Just curious about the idler pulley on your AC. Was that supplied with the kit or something you added?

Did you use the front and rear China wall gaskets that came with the kit? Also did you pull the Pins from same?
