Hey all. This may be a noobish question. I definitely try to do my research and I learn quick though ;) on this Dart that I just picked up, it’s got a bit of a rough run right now, give it a little gas at idle and it bogs down and dies. At idle there seems like backfire/popping as well. If you actually get moving it seems to drive fine.

Question I have atm is about the Carter BBS on it. In this pic here, that’s not normal is it? I do have a bunch of upgrades on the way, I got the exact model of the Carter carb on the carb tag, so I have a rebuild kit coming for that. Though I don’t know if that will fix anything? Also getting some HEI components as I’ve no idea the condition of those pieces (all stock mostly) and it sounds like a worthy upgrade regardless. I think only plugs and wires have been replaced ever.

Thanks!!!
Your missing a little cup that goes in the inside to hold the spring down. That's why it runs like crap.

I agree, in the present condition the accelerator pump isn't working, causing a hesitation on acceleration.

oh man, thank you! very useful information!

Completed my first carb rebuild ever. Turns out the previous owner put the pump spring in backwards, the large end was not sitting in the spring cup/retainer and so the small end was popping out the hole.
Runs much better now, not perfect but way better. Need to do a full valve, timing and carb tune I think.

You can try moving the linkage for the accelerator pump to different holes and see if that makes a difference...

This, plus an oil change, is always first on my list of things to do with a new car. Start with the valve adjust, then move on to points (if you still have 'em), plugs, and timing. It may make a difference, it might not, but at least you know that everything is right regarding the tune-up.
