I have a stock 74 318, picked up Edelbrock Performer intake, and have the chance to get an Edelbrock 1404 manual choke for $40- needs rebuild, and I was thinking of an electric choke conversion. It seems the 1406 is preferred , is this carb worth rebuilding or just go for the 1406?

For under $100 Carb + rebuild kit sounds good to me. Not sure what the choke kit cost now-a-days . I'd give it a go. A 1404 is really great for a small engine.I've run 'um on Slant Six cars and 318's. I even ran one on my 451 stroker B body. Many guys go too big on a the street car. Smaller CFM's give better throttle response.

Sent you a PM. I would be interested in the 1404 id you decide otherwise. Thanks.

I like the 1404 for that engine. If you run the numbers, even with 85% Volumetric Efficiency, it only comes out to 430 CFM at 5500 RPM. A 600 will work. I've seen it done. But the 500 will be MUCH livelier.

Edelbrock electric choke carbs are built to meet emissions standards as direct replacement carbs for some applications. Manual choke ones are not. The better carb is a manual choke carb with an electric choke kit installed. Cost a few extra bucks but it runs better...

I mean if you think about it, I used to crack 120 mph in a Dodge Monaco with a 318 2bbl. I don’t think you’ll miss the extra cfm, and it’ll actually run and idle cleaner with the 500.
