Here's the facts and let me know what ya think while you're recuperating from Thanksgiving meal. This is for my 64 D100 440/727. I'm going to rebuild one with a powr-lok. I'm looking the right gear for this combo, somewhere in the middle. This truck will see some road trips but, mostly local and I don't care about racing. I don't want to be a dog with the 727 either. I know some of you folks are good at calculating this sort of stuff. I have a 3.23, 2.94, 2.76 and all are 741s. I'm not using the 3.91s because it seems too high RPM on the Hwy. No I don't have a tach. Truck is a flying brick weighing 3400ibs. Any of the 3 gear sets will work by my calculations.
76-440 Never been on the dyno and I didn't rebuild it. Truck engine. Internals?
727 rebuilt with TF-2 (Medium drill on the holes) PTK Valve body.
29.3 inch tires
Stock 452 heads
Edelbrock 1407 750 CFM
Edelbrock 2190 Spread bore intake
Edelbrock 2192 Performer Plus cam
Duration at .006" Lift: Intake 270° Exhaust 280° Duration at .050" Lift: Intake 204° Exhaust 214° Lift at cam: Intake .280" Exhaust .295" Lift at valve: Intake .420" Exhaust .442" Timing at .050 Lift: Open Close Intake 5° ATDC 29° ABDC Exhaust 44° BBDC 10° BTDC Centerlines: Lobe Separation - 112° Intake Centerline - 107°

Thanks Craig

I would go with the 3:23's. I had that gear in a Firebird 400 I had and it did well on the highway but still would set you back when you got on it. I have 2:76 in my Barracuda and don't like it, too high! I am thinking of going to 3:55's in it. I want more out of the hole punch and I don't drive it much. I have a mild 360 in it.
Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

I would use the 3.23. The 3.55 I had in my 65D100 with 440 auto and 31" tire had plenty of torque.
There was no problem frying the tires for a block. lol
2.94 wouldn't be a bad choice depending on tire size.

Forgot that 29.3

Here's your approximate rpm at each mph with 3.23 and 29.3 tires...you shouldn't go any higher (lower numerically) from your available gear sets:
55 = 2150
65 = 2545
75 = 2935
85 = 3325

You should be able to down shift into second and pull hard all the way to 85 (approx 5125 rpm) with that engine setup on highway.

Had 3.23s in my 70 Dart, 360/727, TTi headers, and full 3" x pipe exhaust. worked really well, good punch when I romped on it, decent fuel economy, plus easy highway cruising.
