mailing/shipping to canada

Yes, I get stuff shipped to my sisters American addy. It’s an at the border shipping/receiving depot. It had to be sent in my sisters name and she needs an email to be able to bring it across the border. It has to have the price less the shipping cause I / she gets charged taxes. It also costs $3-5 bucks at the depot per package. If it is sent in my name they won’t allow her to bring it across as it is not addressed to her. A few times I have been screwed over by missing parts. I don’t know this till I get my parts from my sister a few months later. And I get the same story: everything was in there when I shipped it, must of gotten opened and lost at the border. My sister picks them up at the depot and it hasn’t been opened there it at the border. When I take parts across the border to ship it costs me $27.65 for a truck charge and a business fee even though I am not a business. I can ship to almost any of the States cheaper than shipping across Canada, which is really ridiculous I think. Kim

I must say that most members have no problem doing this extra for me and for that I thank u guys very much. It is very much appreciated. Thanks. Kim

I'm an hour from Port Huron, MI - I have big stuff shipped to a drop box there and pick it up when we go over for a weekend - saved $$ on shipping and customs pays for the hotel!!
But on average, I figure 1/3 of my overall restoration costs has been shipping.

Man Canada has some strange charges 3-5 bucks per package? Truck fees? Taxes on used parts? I guess they have to fund the Socialized Health care some how?

My daughter lives just north of Ontario. We love visiting up there. Friendly people, and it is very clean. It is a beautiful area. When we ship something up there (and we rarely do), it costs about triple what it cost to ship from Kansas to Detroit or Buffalo. Steve is right when he says "It is what it is."

LOL, nothing to do with Socialized Health care. That $3-5 per pkg charge is on the US side, at the US depot. Nothing to do with Canada.

Thanks for the kind words about our Country! I love it and wouldnt have it any other way(except this time of year lol) :canada:

I guess we have it lucky then. I just ordered a Champion 3 core radiator for a 55 Chevy I'm working on from California to Plant City Fl. over 2111 miles away, Free shipping and was the best price I found for it.

Roy, that is at the US side for me to be able to ship stuff. I shipped it in a flat rate box for $23.00 Usd. With insurance. Plus the 27.65. So $55.65 usd to ship. It was $75.00 Canadian to ship from here so pretty much a wash. Kim

Yep, US has TONS more selection to shop from PLUS usually free shipping within US.
Only place is Summit and they JUST started offering free shipping to canada if we spend over $399 US

Well I guess that is a step in the right direction on Summits part.

There is not supposed to be tax on used auto parts. But at some point i dont want to argue , pay and get on with my day. Its an expensive hobby, but 1/2 the time its cheaper even with shipping to buy south of the border.

I have spoken with Canada Customs about the "used parts" tax. I quote "any car parts new or used are open to taxes"
So used parts are fair game to them. She also said anything under $20 wont get nailed due to simply being too busy.

I buy parts from the US all the time. Rock Auto is my go-to for new parts as the pricing including shipping is considerably less than buying local. I would love to support local business but I find the pricing is almost double the prices on RA.
A Cardone distributor is $300 at Napa but is $162 delivered on RA.
I also find e-bay sellers often offer free shipping in the US so I also use a drop ship service to Sweetgrass MT. It's an 8 hour round trip so I either purchase multiple items or find a local making a border run and have them pick up (or vice versa).
I also have sold parts to buyers in the US and quoted shipping from the same drop shippers at a considerable saving to them.
Shipped four wheels-over $200 from Canada to CT but was $92 from MT. That was a deal saver.
Plus I can purchase beer cheap at the duty free and buy soda that we can't get here in the Great White North. One trip I picked up 16 12-packs of Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke and Diet Cherry 7-Up for friends. Border officer just laughed at that and waved me through!

I did read somewhere about used auto parts being exempt, and parts manufactured in canada purchased in us are also exempt coning back into canada. That was a few years ago. I wasnt thinking when i found it and should have printed it.

I have NO idea why people call it a hassle? For us to ship anywhere in the world, it is as simple as filling out a label. Label includes shippers address, buyers address, what the contents are and the value. That's it, so please explain the hassle lol.
Price more than likely will go up the further you are from the receiver. Flat rate does not apply when crossing borders, and I've tried using "media" but that doesnt work any more. We dont have flat rate shipping to the US. We only recently got flat rate within Canada.
Please ship via USPS only. Couriers pour it to us when its shipped via courier.

Too many of us have forgotten the years ago past efforts and costs involved in selling and buying. Today the internet makes it simple and easy from the comfort of our homes/shop. Listing, communicating, packaging and labeling for sellers and simply hitting a button or 2 for buyers. A worldwide flea market while sitting in a chair.

What’s the big deal re stressing about shipping costs in this environment or the “work” involved? In the past the costs involved in selling and/or sourcing parts involved travel, sometimes accommodation, food, site rentals (if selling) etc. etc. etc. Quite an investment made upfront before a single item was bought or sold.

I remember the time, work, $, and effort involved. Those who were/are flea market vendors won’t ever forget. Compare that to the effort today of packing a box, filling out a very simple label and driving to the post office. Done, $ in the pocket.

Ever think about what your upfront investment was in those past situations and often did not even the find the part you were looking for? Today shipping costs simply should be regarded as “sourcing costs” like we have always had and now usually much cheaper than the “old way”. But people fret today?

To sellers: Steve @4spdragtop is right. If you have decided to list and sell an item pack it up right away. That’s the bulk of the “work” already done.

If the part is for an antique vehical there is not supposed to be any taxes or duty charged. But the hassle of arguing with the Border Patrol sometimes isn’t worth it. Kim

Well said! Shipping costs=sourcing costs, LOVE THAT.
I used to drive to Barrie Flea market. One of the biggest around here. Twice a year.
Almost 2 hour drive. Then walk around ALL DAY, and find NOTHING. This was back in the 80's pre internet and when NOTHING was organized.
This whining/complaining about the "work" involved shipping to Canadians is ridiculous. It's a label!! The same thing is needed to ship to an American isnt it? Or does it magically know where it's supposed to go??

Sorry Kim, not sure where your info came from, but all auto parts new or used are susceptible to taxes/fees. They dont bother with anything under $20 due to sheer volume of parcels. This came from Canada Customs directly themselves.
It's a hit or miss.
When Badsport shipped up a new top end kit from Comp Cams, the value was well over $500 Cdn and shipped to Dad. Not a nickel in taxes/fees lol.
Spin the wheel lol

Right on Steve. And..... supposing you had found an armrest you needed at the flea market for $10.00 and had spent $27 in gas to get there. We would never have said that the armrest cost you $37. Maybe you had lunch at the flea market as well? So the total cost of the arm rest to you was actually approx. $47. Shipping costs would not be that high even today and the difference now is you were at home relaxed having a cold one when you bought it! LOL!

Sure at 64 years of age I remember those days. That was when I use to put Sunoco 260 in my 70 340 Duster for 36.9 cents a gallon.

I'm lucky as I have a freight forwarder in Blaine WA that brings the stuff to Victoria for $15 per order...then go to customs at the airport..clear it free if under about $125, and drive home, after saving mucho $$$. Like what has been said, I'd support the local guys IF they were anywhere near on prices...Example: Wifey's Must*ng...lower control arms...$150 ea up here at Lordco even with my son's discount...Rock Auto $51.00 CDN, free shipping to Blaine. Needless to say, R.A. is also my go-to as well
