Hello first time posting here. I have acquired a duster that I am deciding what path to take. It is definitely a project and every aspect will have to be dealt with. I thought I was buying a 72 duster, four speed car due to the vin# on dash but after beginning to look in other areas I have found that I have matching numbers on the radiator support and package trey and they do not match the vin.
Here is where I can use some help. The number I have referenced is BI 301882. Is it possible to reference these numbers and tell me what I am dealing with.

Thanks.

The I in BI indicates a 1971 model.

If you just bought it, ask for your money back, VIN swapping to another car is a felony.

You can also call your state police to report the crime.

The time to act is NOW, do not delay.

Thanks Alaskan TA I have had car about six months and it was a cheep buy just to get something to tinker with. If I remember right when I bought the car it was advertised as a 1970. I just wanted to know what I was working with and found these numbers were different.

What you are 'working with' is crime scene evidence.

Evidence that could be confiscated at any time.

The body may be stolen, or..... just call your state police and let them figure it all out.

The longer you delay after the initial discovery will just make the authorities wonder why you waited so long....

The body stampings should be on the rad support and either trunk rail or package tray. Last few numbers should match your VIN. Bear in mind that these girls, the dash frame unbolts, so someone may have stuck a different dash in there. That does not of course, make it legal.

I would immediately contact the seller and mention words like lawyer, fraud, police

Thanks for reply 67Dart273. I am in Alabama which is a no title state if vehicle is over 35 years old. I bought car with bill of sale along with other items like engine, auto trans, 4 speed trans, seat etc....i feel like I want to put car together and get back on road but every aspect of car would have to be gone through.

When I saw that the radiator core number and the package tray number were the same but not what was on the vin it did raise some eyebrows. I believe I will check with local dmv and see what I can find out. Is there a way I can find out with the BI 301882 number what the vin should be for these body numbers?

Thanks again,

Contact your state police and they will run the body numbers for you.

Just ask yourself, "Is the cheap price I paid for this car worth me possibly serving jail time" because ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. The problem will really come home to roost when you try to license the car. By that time your in it deep financially & could possibly loose everything. It happen to a good friend here in Texas, he received 7 years jail time & will possibly get out in 2024 with good behavior.

I reached out to the dmv today and explained the issue I had with body parts not matching vin on car. I knew Alabama did not require a title on vehicles older than 35 years old but wanted to verify if I could that once I got car up and running I would not have an issue with registration. As long as I had a bill of sale with verification of vin on dash matching the vin on car I could register. They also were kind enough to run the vin and there were no record of issues for the last ten years, which is as far back as they retain records. I knew that I was buying a car that had been out of commission for quite a while. Thanks for the input and advise.

Check NICB.

sometimes things disappear over time from NCIC but stay in NICB

every now and then There’s a newspaper article about some car that was reported stolen 50 years ago and no one knew As the record was lost/old/didn’t stay In one system b it stayed in another.
