Shock plate differences?

As I learn more and more about the "little details" I start thinking up more and more questions. Here's my latest.

On A/B/E and whatever, what's the difference between shock plates for 8-3/4 rear ends, if any?

I've seen some described as "heavy duty" that are supposed to be thicker or something and fit dana 60's etc, but that's it. Places that sell them don't "explain" the differences, just what they fit so I'm looking for better "lore" I guess.

Good question, I have also seen people here advertise 8 1/4 plates as fitting the 8 3/4 and Dana's. Nope! Not from what I understand.

As I understand, aren't dana's a 3-1/4" tube and 8-3/4 3" tube?
 
No doubt. I am reading all sorts of different dimensions on the web. I have some 7 1/4 plates handy, I will measure them here in a bit. I could see where there may be differences in the 8 3/4 plates. Time to look at pictures.
 
I have some 7 1/4 stuff too, not much. I couldnt give the entire rear away. I eventually did to the scrap bin.

8-1/4” will use 8-3/4” shock plates Dana will not and 7-1/4” plates only work on 7-1/4” axles in the Mopar line. I don’t count brand x manufacturers.
*Note* an 8-3/4” CAR shock plate also doesn’t care if if it’s A-B-E body they will all interchange from 62’ to 72’ 8-3/4”
*Also note* 62’ B body is the origin of this plate.

So you can put 8 3/4" shock plates on an 8 1/4?
Can you do the reverse? 8 1/4 shock plates on a 8 3/4?

I'm not finding any different photos of the 8 3/4 plates. May be Mr Sinister knows of differences between applications. I could see where a A body plate would be lighter duty than a B or C body plate but I have never heard of any difference.
 
I see brewer sells reconditioned plates for 8 3/4 and Dana.
I see 2 different part numbers. One looks like the 8 1/4 plates I have. The ones with the rounded indentations look like the 8 1/4 plates I have.

73’ and later B bodies used an isolated pad on the leaf springs so they had a different style similar to the F-M-J bodies. You familiar? Aspen Volare Miranda and Córdoba look under their rear ends and you will see. Only B bodies had the 8-3/4” the others had 8-1/4”s.

Well, now I'm gonna MAKE it stoopid.. since you challenged me and all :)

Is there an actual difference in the shock plate or is the isolator simply an added item?
 
I think ford uses 3 1/4 tube on their dana's is where the problem comes in. The dodge dana, 8 3/4 and 8.25 have 3" tubes. Some later 8 1/4 use different mounting design that is different

No challenge if I remember correctly the lower plate is different but I can’t fully remember how, but when I put an older B body 8-3/4” in a Volare I had to remove all of that because the locating holes in the 8-3/4” mounting pads were too small for that mount so they were removed and the axle mounted right on the leaf springs and old school 8-3/4” shock plates with no issues.
If I am wrong please correct me as I am only speaking on my personal experience. I don’t mind being wrong.... it makes me humble.

yeah I know you weren't actually challenging me. Not much to challenge since I asked the original question. Just making a light hearted jab at myself.

All of this is helpful. Especially since I'm planning on a junkyard crawl soon and building a list of things to scavenge.
 
8.25, 8.75 and Dana all have 3" tubes
I installed a Dana from a 71 GTX into my 71 RR using the 8.75 plates no problem.
I have also installed two Strange Dana 60's into E bodies using the 8.75 plates again no problem.
70 E body plates are different than the others.
Here are some of the plates I've had. left is 8.75. Right is 8.25

Here is the 70 E body only plate from an 8.75 now with a Strange Dana 60.
As you can see the 70 E plate has a much deeper ear.
