Pour some Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and in the oil.
Yes! For an engine that has not run for a long time, pull the plugs and put a tablespoon or two of oil (couple of squirts from a pump oil can) into each cylinder, then slowly rotate the front of the crank a few revolutions to allow the pistons to have some lubrication. Prime the engine with oil, then put the plugs back in. Dry engines can do a lot of damage fast.

Hmmm...Rebuilt 35 years ago, driven 50 miles, parked and not run in 5-10 years.
None of this adds up. I’d figure the engine and possibly the whole car needs going thru.
If you decide to turn the engine over, leave the oil in unless it’s dirty or milky, spray PB Blaster on the rockers and inside the cylinders, leave the spark plugs out, spin up the dizzy, turn over the motor, (make sure nothing weird comes out) then put the plugs back in to see if she’ll fire up with fresh gas.

8900? We’ve not seen the car, granted. But if it’s all there, that’s a steal running or not. A buddy picked up a H code 70 swinger roller last year that was rather clean for 4 or 45. Then you have to add a motor, trans, and all the other crap.

Not growing on trees...

Thanks to all for the advice and info. I decided to walk away, he was asking $8900 for it and if it was able to at least start I would have pulled the trigger. I have one project now and don't need another money pit lol.
Thanks again
Dan
Probably best. If it would have started with something as simple as some fresh gas, HE WOULD HAVE DONE THAT.

It was supposedly a california car but not a H code was born a /6 with a 34 yr old laquer paint job. He had done quite a bit to it on the conversion K frame, 4 sp, 8 3/4 with 4:10 and supposedly ss springs. Yes it was a nice car appeared to be very solid but it would have been another project that I really don't need right now. If I was computer savvy I would post the ad but !!!!

Everyone is making good points. My train of thought has always been if the engine has significant damage you'll be able to tell within a few seconds and if that's the case it's going to have to be tore down and repaired and likely the damage already been done prior. So fire that puppy up just be ready to shut it down if it starts clattering.
Used to get em running after they sat in fields for years. you are correct youll know right away if it needs torn down. I wouldt get all surgical because its a 340,id get it running and see what it does if it makes noise and smokes Id tear it down. minimal rust on the bores will polish off if it is too bad the rings will break and youll know. If the rings dont seal youll know rather quickly. On the other hand if you want to open it up and you have the $$$ and the skills go for it. these cars are easy to wrench on.
