On a 1973 Dart Swinger Special with a 318/904 and an 8 3/4 rear, would the driveshaft length be 47.75”?

If you check the parts catalogue for your year it may have lengths, 67 does.

BUT the safest thing is to measure twice and cut once. Get everything installed and all 4 on the ground, slip yoke in the transmission pulled out to the same length as with the old setup, and measure CL to CL

ALSO some online drive shaft makers have their own method of measuring so follow what they say if using one of those.

Thanks! I’m not trying to cut anything. I ordered a new rear end and am ordering a new driveshaft, and I’m trying to figure out the correct one to order.

I get it and I understand, my comment about measure twice and cut once was not a literal cut, it was a metaphor.

But untill everything is in you will not know if it is the correct length, and may end up buying another shaft.

The parts book SHOULD have the correct length for a particular combination of car, trans, and rear ASSUMING it ever came that way. But mistakes are made in parts books.

Was this combo made?? Special order only maybe?? That's a heavy rear for light duty trans.... other folks here will know better than me, but I'd say thats not a likely combo, until people started setting them up that way themselves.

Yes, special order.

Someone answered this elsewhere, but for forum searchers - a 318/904 Dart Swinger will need a 51.75” driveshaft if you’re switching to an 8 3/4 rear.

1) install rearend
2) talk to driveshaft shop and see how they want it measured
3) do what they say and live a happy life

Yes, measure to the u-joint centerlines with rear suspension supporting the rear at normal height and the yoke out about 3/4 inch. There is no hard measurent for this application, Only yours as all cars are slightly different within tolerances. You'll be sure to get the right one made (longer one cut down) for your car.
