Coans are great converters. I know one of the sales reps, Craig. I know racers that use them, high quality converters. Pricey.

Pricy is right. ....I've never paid more than $400 for a torque converter. ....!

In the late 80's, Craig was running 9.20's and would only use a Coan transmission. He ended up working for them now... LOL.
 
At what input torque? What diameter is it?
I think it's 8.5"......I don't know about "torque input", but they wanted to know my max torque so I called over to IMM Engines and was told 485 torque @ 4200 RPM.

wow the last ptc i got was $600.00.9.5" 3200-3500 .im getting ready to fresh up the trans and convertor,quess ill find out how much they went up
 
Amazing how we're always tellin people the converter is the single most important part of a build. A guy gets a really good one and people caint tell him enough he spent too much. damn

Kinda like if someone started a thread asking for engine build recommendations and people had a field day spending the OP's money recommending a stroker, roller cam, fancy heads, etc. Then when the OP shows how much they spent, people would then come on shitting on the build saying he coulda reached his goals with a basic rebuild, purpleshaft cam, touched up stock heads and a rebuilt garage sale Holley 750 DP.

Exactly. You don't have anything to worry about. You're gonna be happy with it.
 
Converters are a special piece. Within certain limits, you kinda get what you pay for. There are "off the shelf" street type converters for just a few hundred dollars. Then there are really high tech unbreakable user adjustable units that go for several thousand. Most of us are in the middle. The last two converters I bought were 9.5 units for a slant six. They will stall about 3000-3200 with a 170 engine, and about 3800-4000 with a 225. I don't need the strongest internals, as I don't make massive torque/power. One of my 170 engines (only one I've had on the dyno) made 354 lb/ft at 2900 rpm. They cost me in the $600-$700 area. The main thing is use a reputable builder, and be honest with the info you give him.
