What might be the best way to remove a vinyl top and hopefully not hurt the paint underneath?
If successful, what might be the best way to remove the glue? Thank You!!

Heat gun but, go slowly and peel back as you warm each area. Do not overheat the vinyl as it will tear . Works better with two people, one heating and on pulling on the material. Do not use thinners anywhere near the paint.

Wax and grease remover attacks most adhesives. Generally they didn't put much paint under the tops.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Thanks!

Is there any way to get the glue off and not hurt the paint?

That's one benefit of heating it. Most of thr glue will come off with the top material. As suggested, get an an adhesive remover.

3m makes a really good one, available on Amazon and most body shop suppliers.

You're going to have to fill and finish the seams anyway, so, why worry about it. They generally didn't finish paint the roof if it was going to get a vinyl top.
