Ok now that i have the water leak fixed lol i tried to get it running today. It has a new electronic distributor, coil & a good but used orange ecu box. It turns over but will not fire. I double checked every thing. First i made sure it was on tdc by the damper. Then i made sure that the rotor was pointing to number 1 on the cap. Then put the wires on the cap accordingly. Pulled number 1 plug wire off the spark plug & made sure it was getting spark & it is. Even with starting fluid it does nothing. Also the ignition switch is new. What am i missing ?

First i made sure it was on tdc by the damper.
And you are working on what?
Are you on the compression stroke when you set TDC?
Are your plugs flooded with fuel?

(Throw that can of starting fluid in the trash)

There are 2 tdc’s. At end of compression stroke, pull #1 plug and bump over with finger over plug hole. As soon as you feel pressure, stop cranking and line up timing mark. Pull cap to verify rotor is pointing to #plug tower. You want to turn distributor a couple degrees clockwise from there. Should fire.

Its a 360 in my barracuda. The block is grounded with a strap & i made a ground strap for the ecu box. The plugs are new & are dry. I did the finger thing on number 1 cylinder inwhich made the rotor point to number 1 on the cap & tdc on the damper. It should fire but no go. Doesnt even think about it.

It wouldn't hurt to clean and tighten up the bulkhead connections as well.

Maybe you checked this but at TDC of compression for cyl #1, the rotor should point to the front left intake manifold bolt. If it does that, then you know the engine is sitting where you want it. Then make sure the tower on the cap aligned on top of the rotor has the plug wire for #1 spark plug on it. Now you just go around the dist cap in a CW direction and route the plug wires according to the firing order.

And if you KNOW you are getting spark by checking it on a dummy plug grounded outside the engine, then you can check off spark as the culprit. I like to at least shoot the timing with a light to double check the timing is reasonable for cranking to get it going...say maybe 10 deg advance.

If all that checks out, you now know you have the ignition side of things covered. Pour a lite gas down the carb throat and it should at least try to fire on that.

ok lol i got it running not sure what i did i tested the ballast & it is good i dont it make a difference but switched the wires on it add a third ground wire to the ecu box put some gas down the carb instead of starting fluid it fired right up lmao now while i had it running i put the timing light on it & the timing mark on the damper isnt even close to the timing marks on the timing chain cover. Didnt matter if i advance it or retarded it that line wouldnt show up. Not sure whats up with that. Thats the way things have been going on it since i bought it. Also i never had an engine with the dove tale rocker arms. They sound just like adjustable roller rockers. Is that normal for them ? They are noisy They were off the heads when i got he engine. I hope i have the on right

what i did i tested the ballast & it is good i dont it make a difference but switched the wires on it
FWIW
Ignition 2 is the start circuit. It bypasses the ballast while starting.
Ignition 1 is the run circuit. The current flow runs through the ballast.
It's what you verify in post 6.

Vacuum line on or off? Is it at idle rpm? You said new electronic distributor, so i doubt its hanging up at full advance. And i always check tdc with a stop and mark 0 degrees.

Did you run the plug wires in the correct direction CCW vs CW?

yep all plug wires are right never gave it a thought about the vacuum line fro the distributor its new & the line from the distributor is plugged That has to be unplugged to set the timing correct ? These are the rockers that i have. I noticed that 2 are really loose. Are these adjustable ? If so how do i go about it Thanks for all your help guys.
