Yup, put one in Dad's car late '22. So far, so good.
 
Damn, they are not even trying to hide the TO-220 package transistor anymore. They used to put a fake TO-3 transistor on it but inside was a TO-220. These will not hold up like the old ones did.

I kinda wonder if they found covering it up held in heat and made them go bad.
 
Interesting. Looks like a better design than the fake transistor ones. A lot may depend on how well they heat sink the transistor. Can’t really tell from the pictures.

When looking at something like this, keep in mind that a lot has changed in the world of semiconductors since the 70s. Most of the heat in a power transistor is generated during switching. Since the speed of semiconductors has increased dramatically in 50 years, the switching time is much less and thus less heat is generated. If you generate less heat, the parts can be smaller.
 
Also states a lower rpm one too.
These OEM-style controllers come in both 5,500 rpm and 6,800 rpm versions to best fit your application
