Transmission is a 70 model Mopar 4 speed A833 sent to Brewers for rebuild. Unit shifts between all gears fine with motor off but when driving, does not want to engage into second gear. Sometimes it will with a firm hand. Sometimes it will if I short shift to third then to second. Before I pull this thing out and send it back wanted to get some opinions. Any comments would be appreciated.

New bushings on shift linkage? Adjusted with 1/4 pin in shifter body? Make sure beforehand. I had shifting issues and bushings were worn.

My 67 Barracuda does the same thing. It grinds going into second until the gear lube warms up.

I’m running 90 weight gear lube. I have replaced all the synchronizer rings and that didn’t help at all.

I just shift from 1 to 3 for the first couple miles. After the lube is warm, all gears shift like butter!

I always read ATF as that’s what Chrysler recommended. That was know as type A back in the day. Now it’s Dexron 1-2 or 3 what e er u can find. Kim

Straight from the 1968 FSM:
"Fill transmission with Multi-Purpose Gear Oil SAE 140. If shift effort becomes excessively high during cold weather, Multi -Purpose Gear Oil SAE 90 should be used. Automatic Transmission Fluid AQ-ATF Suffix "A" (Dexron) may also be used in extremely cold climates."

Dan sent me Sta-Lube SAE 85W90 GL4. No issue with other gears. Linkage adjustment is spot on. I do not have the Hursr shifter with bushings. Will try, as you proposed, to let it heat up. Want to make a comment regarding linkage adjustment which may be incorrect. First and second use the same gate so moving from first to second could not be a linkage adjustment issue. Thanks for all the comments. They are much appreciated.

Just a thought, are the gearshift levers worn?
If the squared off part of the lever is no longer square, the shift arm will turn on the lever before moving the fork.

My trans would run through the gears fine when the engine was not running, but not shift into 3rd.
Basically, it was still in second, just enough, to prevent going into 3rd.

19:38 in the video shows the cover/gearshift levers:

I got you. Makes good sense. Do think that is not the issue but will most certainly give it consideration. Good thought. Thanks for the response.

I think where that was going, that us not knowing the type/limits of the shifters travel, and without the pin to give max front/back movement, is it possible that the rod adjusters moved a twist or two, and won't allow enuff lever travel to be totally/sufficiently in 2nd gear, causing it to jump out.
jminterpretation.
Good luck
