This is the 3rd member in my 72 Challenger. I'm familiar with the 741, 742 and 489 castings but have never seen this one. Any help with info is appreciated.

The pictured rear axle center section of an 8-3/4" axle is a 2881489, aka "489" casting. The last digit was omitted when placing during the molding setup. The slight depression following the last visible digit is where it would have been cast. The second "8" in the casting number is poorly formed as well.

The other casting marks indicate the following:
  • "223" : Carrier housing casting date, for the 22nd week of 1973.
  • "4" : Casting mold/revision reference.
  • "AAPW" : Foundry marking for Chrysler's own foundry that made the casting.
The Chrysler foundry was located at 1100 S. Tibbs Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. Also designated by an "A" in a triangle which references the "American Foundry Company". American Foundry Company was the original company from which Chrysler purchased the facility in 1946 and converted to their own use.

A large "9" may be present higher up on the housing, but it might have been left off as well.

Wouldnt there a big ol "9" on the side of the case that you could see from across the room?

That big single digit would be a "2" if we were talking about a 742 case, and an "X" if it were a 741 case.
