if your carb is running lean pretty much ALL the time(due to the air bleeds)(need to change them),will this cause my car to run hot??

340,.030, hyd cam, X-heads,M-1, 750 with proform body, etc...nothing special...i do run a MOROSO ELECTRIC WATER PUMP and a SUMMIT 16" ELECTRIC FAN with a 160-165 stat with 4 little holes in it.
oh yeah..3 core rad out of a 68 roadrunner.

i see ALOT of posts with people running elec. pumps and fans with NO problems.

thanks!!!

hey mike, how hot is it running and did it start running hot after you changed something.
there has to be some reason for this.

david

do you have a shroud on the rad. and do you know what cfm the fan pulls.

maybe the fan is not pulling enough air across the rad.

have you looked to see how well the water is moving in the rad. with the pump on.

yes,the elec. fan is shrouded...i believe its between a 1700-2100 depending on wiring??
the moroso pump flow better then i thought!!!...i keep it off till it gets hot,i turn it on and it cools down,...and i repeat this till it just stays hot.

do you drive the car on the street.
if you do, does it still run hot while going down the road.

if it cools down while going down the road at speed i would say it has something to do with air flow.

i am sure if the car was running real lean it could cause some heat issues but, i am just trying to make sure you don't have some type of cooling issue first.

Timing is a good place to look. Also is this the electric pump that moroso has been selling for years? If so you may want to try the overdrive pulley(or gear or whatever you want to call it) that they sell to go on the electric motor. Spins the pump a little faster.Just a thought

Yeah, a little more info. I wouldn't leave the pump off until it warms up though. I turn mine on when ever the engine is running but leave the fan off until it gets around 130-140. I should mention here that my car likes to be cold, I don't like to leave the line at more than 140-150.

And to answer your question yes, running the carb lean will make it run warmer.

Will my car overheat if it's left to run? You bet it will. You'll need to regulate the temp with the fan and how long you run the engine.

My car likes to leave at 140 or 150 also. Gets a little tricky in the late rounds but a lot easier since I switched to a Summit aluminum radiator. I ditched my electric fans for a regular aluminum fan run off the electric water pump. A friend had this set-up in his car and it has worked well, I never thought it would. Now only one swith to play with in staging. One thing about the aluminum radiator, it takes a long time to warm up.

Yeah, I take several gallons of water in a cooler full of ice so I can cool it down in the late rounds. I also don't run the car any longer than necessary, I'll get up some speed and click it into neutral and coast up the return road or through the pits when going back up to the lanes.

My 70 Cuda always ran 210-215. It drove me crazy. thats not considered over heating but it was hot enough for me. It would sit and idle at 180 for ever. As soon as I started driving it would shott up. Never found out why.

Well cars today with electric fans don't come on until 212 and go off at 190. This of course is for emissions and fuel economy purposes though. They run better when they are colder.

One more thing, I just gutted a standard thermostat to use as a restrictor. You don't need a t/stat.

I don't run a tstsat either. Since i put the new rad./ fan set-up in the car doesn't go over 190. With the old Chrysler rad. 210-220 was the norm after a couple of runs. Still like to stage at the same temp. every time though. Now if I could just do something about all this rain, i've been ready to go for weeks and we keep getting rained out. haven't made a run yet.

Mike, I'd agree on the "gut the thermostat" part..When it was first done, we used teh belt driven, IIRC. Also, try taking the upper and lower hoses off, and run a garden hose thru the radiator..it should not back up and run out where the hose is..it should flow enought to just run out the bottom...maybe that old radiator is not enough now. Does it do it just at idle? or only after driving it? only after a pass?

Mike, yes, lean condition will cause more heat. Timing will as well.

Question for ya. Are you running the bypass hose to the manifold on the M-1 with the electric pump? If not you will have some heat build up from that as well since it wont be moving the water out of the manifold and upper areas as efficiently. Just a thought.

Another suggestion, fill it throught the manifold to eliminate any air pockets. Sometimes filling it through the radiator won't push the air out of the block/heads. How does the circulation seem with the cap off?

FYI, I run Purple Ice additive and it did drop my temp between 10-15 degrees with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze/water. The stuff worked for me.

moper...yes,you are right...i ran a NORMAL set-up,belt driven fan and pump with the 160-165 stat and never went over 180 even idling!!...since i did all elec.,its been heating up

ed....no by-pass...you cant with the MOROSO elec. pump...i dont really think i have a air pocket cuz i really can see the water flow when i take the cap off.
i only run antifreeze and water...maybe i should try something else.

Mike with all the racing you do you should stop running antifreeze and run some water wetter instead.

Water cools better then antifreeze so it may help but I dont think it will be a big differance. Its mostly a saftey thing. Plus if you hose down the track people wont hate you as much.
